For those that have used an add-a-fuse/fuse tap at fuse 57, which way should it face when installed? I don't have a multi-meter to test. I want to be sure the add-a-fuse/fuse tap has it's power/hot leg in the correct location. Everything I've seen shows it installed with the accessory/device/load wire facing the passenger side. I assume this is correct because the fuse tap can't fit the other way because of the bigger relay next to fuse 57.

I’m no expert but I understand fuses to be nothing more than a thinner wire designed to break or pop when a certain current travels though it. It shouldn’t matter which direction it goes in as long as both ends make contact to the ports.

It makes a big difference. If you plug the adapter in the wrong way, your new circuit won't work without the original fuse. As if this wasn't already bad enough, when both fuses are inserted the current for both circuits runs through the original fuse , which will probably cause it to burn out.

It will not cause the original circuit to burn out. The fuse tap/add-a-fuse is designed to allow the original an add-on fuses to work normally. The add-on fuse must be of equal or lower amperage than the original. If something goes wrong, the original fuse will blow first, followed by the add-on fuse - again this is by design. Therefore, it is important to know which leg is hot. I see people just inserting the fuse taps at fuses 57, 58 or 52 to run their halos, and it seems that because of the relays next to these fuses that the fuse tap can only be inserted one way.

Basically, yes, that is what a fuse does. However, there is always a hot side and an accessory/load side. Power only flows through the fuse in one direction. On a fuse-tap/add-a-fuse, the wire side you connect your accessory to is always the load side. That's why it's important to know which side of the fuse slot in the fuse box is hot.

Ah, that makes sense. So typically a fuse can go in any direction but the fuse tap is specific. Good to know. I’ll be doing this at some point myself. I’m using the factor switched right now but there are times when the state doesn’t save so my DRLs aren’t always DRLs unless I hit the button. Defeats the purpose so I may move my wiring to the fuse 57 as well.

You can use fuse 57, 58 or 52. 57 and 58 are for driver and passenger side heated seats respectively. 52 is for the front cigarette lighter. Oracle Lighting says to use 52 in their directions, so I'll probably use that.

If one does not have heated seats as an option, can you still plug in the fuse tap to get power or is power not run at all to that fuse if it did not come with the heated seats from the factory?

Yes, that circuit still has power. I have a base Sport and those circuits (57 and 58) have power in my JL. I used it as a trigger wire for the relay to run my KC spotlights.
