I just read something that I don’t understand. Is the Rubicon X different than the regular rubicon as far as switching Into 4H or 4L. What is full time transfer? Full time 4wd?
my 18 JL I think had rock track.

Full Time 4WD is also known as 4WD Auto and Selec-Trac. 4WD Auto mode is in addition to 4H and 4L, which are both Part-Time. Rock-Trac only has Part Time 4H & 4L.

Full Time means that you can always have it engaged. It is 2WD and if there is any slip in the rear tires 4WD will seamlessly engage. It will return to 2WD once traction is restored. Full Time 4WD is excellent for winter conditions as it provides 4WD acceleration when it's needed while not causing oversteer skidding in curves like Part Time 4H can.

Part Time means that you can't always have it engaged. You can only use 4H and 4L when the terrain is loose enough to not bind the drivetrain. Pretty much when you're not on pavement.

Full Time 4WD Selec-Trac was an option on my '21 JL. I'm not sure if or how that's changed for current model years. Haven't paid attention TBH.

Yeah, to clarify - you're getting a Rubicon transfer case with an extra position. You have the same 2H, 4H, and 4L, but you also have 4H-auto (full-time), as Reinen explained it. It's an excellent upgrade, in my opinion, for anyone who drives in mixed winter conditions. I had a 21 rubi with the standard t-case, and when I custom-ordered my '22, I opted for the upgraded t-case to get the 4H-auto option. And I have been very happy with it.

And to clarify, if you get a Rubi with the full-time 4WD 4H-auto option, it's still a Rock-trac. It just has an extra position. On my window sticker, it says 4:1 Rock-Trac(R) Heavy-Duty Full-Time 4WD System.

Wish I had that option when buying would have been a must have check box since road conditions here are perfect for it!

Never lived in NY but I am sure you have lots of winter driving. Running around in 4H is bad in some cases for the Jeep. It binds a lot if you hit dry spots in the Winter. The 4Auto takes the shifting in and out of 4H out of the equation.

We ordered it for our 23 JLUR XR. It's an excellent upgrade especially if you have a driver that's not great at reading road conditions or gets really nervous when it's even a little suspect. That would be my wife. I opt for the auto transfer case in everything that offers it. There is a level of security for her knowing she has it in 4A for some reason even in the rain. If it makes here feel safer, then she is more relaxed and drives better.

This might be a dumb question, but do the manual jeeps get the 4H-auto position too?

I don't know what the MY'24 configurations are. There's no reason you couldn't get the 4H-auto t-case with a manual. Whether Jeep offers it/which configurations are restricted, I dunno. It's been 16 months since I was in the ordering/building game. (Also, the manual Jeeps come with an auto-exploding clutch, so what does it matter?!? :D JK. Sort of)

It's unlikely. The 4hi auto is heavily computer controlled and probably integrated with the transmission control.

There's no reason you can't bolt the case to the transmission. But getting it to work right is difficult.

Back in the XJ Cheokee days (1984-2001) they offered a part time case (NP231) and full time case (NP242). The full time only came behind the automatic. And that didn't even have computer control in the case.

That would be an OPTION, std is "Rock-Trac Heavy-Duty, Part Time 4WD System"

Also, if I recall correctly, Full Time 4WD (4WD Auto or Selec-Trac) comes with CV joints(?)

Sounds like a great option if you can have it along side 2WD High, and 4WD high and 4WD low, and only choose the 4WD-Auto full-time when you have a reason to choose it.

If that's how it worked when I ordered my 2022 JLR, I didn't know it and should have asked some more questions at the dealer, haha.

I thought if you ordered 4WD-Auto full-time, it was on all the time. I like rear wheel drive, and really like driving a 2door in 2WD on the road. I wouldn't have wanted an all-wheel-drive, full-time 4WD vehicle. Except for snow days where it would be very useful. 4WD-Auto full-time as described by Reinen and ColoradoMike sounds like you can choose it just when you want it.

Oh well, I've had two snowy winters now in my rock-track JLR without any complaints, and and 23 snowy winters before that in a TJ, so I'm probably not in dire straights.

Yep. I keep my 22 Rubi in 2H 90% of the time. On the trail, 4H or more likely 4L. I only put it in 4H-auto on snow days or sometimes in heavy rain.
