Filiform/galvanic corrosion

Good afternoon, all.

Purchased my 2018 JL used, but everything about it presents like it is next to new...until I noticed the paint bubbling.

Has anyone successfully dealt with a dealership or Jeep directly to assist (at the very least) with the apparently inherent filiform/galvanic corrosion that is common with these rigs?

If so, would you care to share your strategy?

Sorry to say but you are screwed if you expect Jeep to do anything about it. You are outside the 5yr/60k mile corrosion warranty. This is common because they assemble the doors, hinges and bolts with dissimilar metals (aluminum and steel) without any coatings applied before assembly.

I found it on my wife's 2019 at around 50k miles and 2 weeks beyond the 5 years. It took 10 months to be denied a warranty claim and a goodwill claim.

Galvanic corrosion is the more common term. It won’t be covered on a 2018 model.

@tk1700 I don’t think it’s 5yr / 60k. I believe it’s 5 years from the date of first purchased new. I could be wrong.

5 years from first date put into service, usually the date when purchased new and 60k miles on the odometer, whichever comes first.

My 2021 is currently at the dealership getting corrosion taken care of. It will cost me about $1500 USD on a $9000 invoice as a "good faith" gesture. This "good faith" gesture will expire for me Novemnber 2026. Picking up today. Has taken about a week to fix all 4 doors and lower door panels all 4. Also tailgate. I hope they use a 2k urethane to fix however I'm not confident. So I will be dealing with a less robust coating.

In 2023 they were incorporated on 2024 model year Wrangler's. It's been roughly 3-years on the assembly line.

If sacrificial zinc shims were installed starting in 2028 with the new body style Stellantis would have saved untold millions in body shop warranty repairs. I'm sure some bean counter in accounting told upper management that corporate would save big $$$$ every year by not installing the zinc shims on the assembly line.

Hello all. First time posting. Been rock crawling since the 80s but haven’t for a bit, and this is my first Jeep.
Just bought my 2018 JLUR in May with 40k miles on it.
Like OP it looked shiny and near perfect until I found the bubbles on two doors, most hinges and a tiny spot on the hood.
Been navigating the issue today with dealership, JeepCares, and FCA. Found out the certified used vehicle ltd warranty won’t cover it. The expensive third party warranty I bought won’t cover it. And was just told by dealer that goodwill is not an option on vehicles older than 2019.

My plan is to try and deal with it myself. Thinking of ordering replacement aftermarket hinges and leaving either raw or anodized. Sanding portions of doors that are corroded and see if I can cover by maybe installing sections of diamond plate along the bottoms

Or treat the individual spots and cover with some nice decals.
I bought it to do some serious trials with, including a return to Dusy Ershim which I haven’t done for about 25yrs. So I’m bound to get some damage at some point.
Not at all happy with the problem and no support from FCA but going to try and make the best of it!
And I explained my brand loyalty, own a 2018 Durango SRT ( mopar 18 model) bought new. Traded in a 2021 scat pack challenger with a manual 6 on this jeep. Helped two daughters get Jeep cherokees. Talked my dad into buying a TRX. Still got me nowhere.
If anyone has any suggestions on best ways/product to halt the corrosion before hiding it I would love to hear them.

Not being rude, just genuinely curious, since the doors and hinges are both aluminum, how does the shim help?

The theory is that the zinc will not react with either the steel or aluminum, which is not the case with steel in direct contact with aluminum

ETA the hinges are steel NOT aluminum.
