I am like the only person around here that doesn't care about ESS. The only times I disable it are when I'm driving my kid around to get her to sleep because the restarts tend to wake her up. Otherwise I leave it on and it never gets in the way of my manual transmission driving habits.

I'd much, much rather had ESS than pay for a gas guzzler tax upon purchase. I am getting excellent (IMO) gas mileage but I'm not sure how much the ESS plays into it (not much, probably, since I seldom drive in conditions when it's active).

I suggest you don't point at the gubbermint as requiring ESS. FCA chose ESS as a means of achieving whatever it decided is the optimal level emissions and fuel efficiency figures to maximize profits based on the regulations it is beholden to in the US market and abroad. FCA might have been able to avoid ESS by designing the Pentastar to maximize fuel economy, lightening the JL(U) even more to reduce fuel consumption, opted for hybridization/electrification across all powertrains, or reduced the Wrangler's off-road capabilities by lightening/weakening components, etc. etc. IMHO FCA chose one of or the least disruptive means of achieving better fuel economy/profits. I'm getting nearly 23 mpg lifetime and that's pretty damn good.
BTW, FCA also chose ESS to comply with global regulations, not just US. ESS is mandatory on EU markets, and is being introduced in other places where smog doesn’t let people see their spouse sitting 3 feet away.

tl;dr

I disabled it. So my only expectation is that it stays disabled.

ESS has never bothered me, and although it is a slight irritation to turn it off once in the Jeep, sometimes I forget and try to beat it to the punch, so to speak. Most of the time it turns off before I hit the switch. The reason I turn it off? I like in Louisville, KY, the humidity capital of the world and 90 degree heat in the summer, sweltering, nasty, grungy, well you get the picture. I totally understand and agree with the OP, but why not make it a "Positive " choice instead of a negative reward? Let us turn it off (and let it stay off with an on/off switch) with one click of the button, with the understanding that we may not get as good as gas mileage as Jeep promises. That will please both sides. I'm all for compromises.

New Delhi makes Beijing look like a paradise every Novermber. AQI can approach 999 at times. The UN considers any AQI level above 250 to be "severe". Breathing in Delhi air in November is equivalent to smoking 10 cigarettes a day. Trust me! Us Indians wish we can achieve the AQI levels of at least Beijing in Delhi...and that is saying something!

As a result, the Indian Government is extra strict on any non commercial manufacturer selling a vehicle with an engine displacement of 2 Liters or more. That unfortunately includes the Wrangler they sell in India as it is available in either a 2 Liter Turbo Petrol or a 2.2 Liter Turbo Diesel. This is where technologies such as ESS and eTorque become very important for FCA as India is one of the top 5 global markets for Automotive.

Pushing that ESS button seems such a first-world problem all of a sudden.

Except when you learn how to manipulate when it does and does not autostop. Applying light enough pressure on the brake prevents an autostop and I tend to use that when I know its going to be a super quick stop at a stop sign or the like. Manual drivers have even better control.
yeah, but feathering the brake pedal is a skill I don’t need if I push the button :) . Plus I only have so many neurons left firing, don’t want to waste them on outsmarting ESS. They have more important tasks, like watching cat videos on YouTube...

I wonder about the wear and tear on the engine and the environmental effects of replacing things more frequently. Over the life of the vehicle, that's gotta be worse on the environment than the 0.0025 seconds of not being on between when I come to a 4 way stop and then accelerate again.

Generally, if I'm gonna be stopped more than a few minutes, I turn the engine off. What FREAKING DRIVES ME NUTS is the shut down after just a second or two.

Bought myself a Taser last night and won't every have to deal with this crap again in 3 more days.

I do make good use of the ESS at some of these extra long stop lights around town. Especially if Becky in front of me in the Benz SUV is too busy texting to realize she can actually go left now...
