I have been asked this question a lot on these forums. I hope this answers everyone's questions.

Currently producing:
2.0 ESS
2.0 BSG
3.6 ESS W/Manual option
2.2 DIESEL (Europe only)

2019 Options
2.0 ESS
2.0 BSG
3.6 ESS W/Manual option
3.6 BSG
2.2 DIESEL (Europe only)
3.0 Turbo DIESEL
HYBRID (Not sure engine specs)

Rumor is FCA Is working on a new straight 6 , .not sure if it's true or if it would be for the Jeep.

Also I have seen a lot of people wonder why there isn't a HEMI for the Jeep.
I'm not a engineer but this is my best guess why. Jeep is a body on frame. So picture the body being built separate from the frame. Then they come together. It's hard to describe but the body is lowered right on top of the frame with the engine and transmission already installed. It's actually really frickin awesome watching this process. There is just centimeters of clearance all the way around. Long story short, I don't think it would fit doing it this way.

Man I hope they offer a M/T with the Diesel option - a Jeep needs an M/T option on everything they sell IMO. Thanks for the info and thanks for the updates. Pretty cool to get updates from someone involved in actually building what we love to drive.

Doc... Duh.
Hoping to see gas mileage on the 3.6bsg and Diesel some day. And thanks for all the info. Really awesome you update us and keeps my excited for my eventual JLUR.

I’d also be interested in the plug in depending on how efficient it is.

Is that 2.0 ESS for the Cherokee or is this a European option?

That's why I pulled the trigger early and bought the 2018 M/T 3.6L. It would be great to get the diesel 2DR with a M/T but not in the cards!

The plug in hybrid will be interesting but I see it as a dedicated mall crawler unless the powertrain is sealed completely somehow.

Honestly we don't know what the plug in's actual drivetrain looks like but about 10 years ago they had a Concept JKU that was a pure electric drive, with a gas range extender much like the way the Chevy Volt operates. It had an electric motor for each wheel, so no drive shaft or transfer case or anything like that. It was a pretty neat Idea but didn't make it through/delayed a decade due to the bankruptcy.

hemi would fit. arent companies already doing the swap?

as to the straight 6, i would assume it would be longer than either a v8, v6 or 4 cylinder. that one might not fit.

if its true you can still get the 3.6 ESS (avoid the 48 volt battery and the mailbox on the front of the engine). that is good news as far as im concerned.

and though im verly likely not a buyer for a diesel (cost and no 6 speed) i'd like to know when those will show up (3.0 us version).

The way I read his reply was that with the current manufacturing practices of lowering the body on the frame with the engine already mounted wouldn’t allow for the use of the hemi. Swapping manufacturing procedure would be a nightmare to accomplish and very expensive when these are selling so well.
