You know it might be a long shot, but you might be better off selling your rig and buying a jeep that is rebuildable wreck.

This whole thread is purely winter boredom and dreams of a better time (IMO) when engine swaps were common and tons of fun for us who have nothing better to do than wrench, cut , weld...repeat.

Don't get too serious about it, lay back and enjoy it as they say...lol

Just a really far fetch thought, WAY out there...
What it this little diesel engine really SHt the bed...I wonder how impossible it would be to swap in another diesel...with NO emission crap.

Damn, wouldn't that be a dream.
I would love to put a good ol 5.9 cummins in mine. Theres one guy who did it on a JK so Im sure its possible on the JL. Would be alot of fun.

Jeep Wrangler JL Engine Swap... Screenshot_20230202-213106

I'm not sure what the laws are like in Utah, but in Texas you could totally get away with doing this.

If you type in "5.9L Cummins Wrangler" into the Google search bar, you can get quite a few videos and a little bit of information of people swapping these into the slightly smaller JK engine bays.

I'm not even sure what the cost in this would be, all the videos I've seen people doing it themselves on their farms. I have a friend with a 2009 Ram 1500 who took out the 4.7L V8 that came with it and swapped in a this same Cummins 5.9L Diesel. His was from his father's old truck. He had a buddy of his who owns a diesel repair shop do the work for him, I know for a fact the guy charged him $14,000 and that was the friends and family discount. Also help that the guy worked on it in his free time under no timeline, I believe it took him 6 months to complete it.

All this being said, it's definitely doable. Honestly it's something I plan on doing when my 3.0 EcoDiesel dies. I'm just hoping that Cummins is still selling the rebuilt 5.9L whenever that does happen.

Best of luck, and yeah it's totally doable. It just really matters how much effort you willing to put into it, and how likely your state is to care that you did it. Just don't go posting about it when you do it.

Oh heck ya...can you imaging 930 lb/ft of torque! I wonder what electronics it requires and what feedback our off-road panel requires...I could totally see me stuffing that in my JLURD if the body is still good. The problem would be getting computer controls worked out (and keeping it to an ABSOLUTE minimum).
Great post BTW...

Vehicles become EPA/DOT exempt once they’re 25 years old.
‘Deleting’ your 3.0 could be another option, however too many YT jockeys shed unwanted attention on such modifications, when done while required emission compliances are still in place.

I'd worry about having to reinforce the frame, axles, and suspension to handle all that weight and torque.

It may almost be easier to put a Wrangler body on a Ram 2500 frame.

My plan is.... if the EcoDiesel goes south. And craps out in the future I'm going to pull it and put the 6.4L Hemi in place. Shops pull the 3.6 in the 2.0 all the time. It's virtually Plug and Play application with just a few slight alterations. I would definitely get the 392 Hood to go with it. That functional air scoop is phenomenal. IMO. The bonus for us diesel owners the transmission is already the same one used with the Hemi.

That is a solid idea! Anywhere you know that sells just the 392 engines? Cuz I know americas most wanted 4x4 sells the entire kits transmissions included.

Plus upgrade Transmission, TC, driveshafts, cooling on top of reinforcing frame, D60’s min ( or big axle 9”Ford on CJ’s, race gears and axles in 44’s insufficient), suspension. Getting it all fitted, mounted, relocated as needed. The only ( mostly) stock part left was the body, on a pre smog, pre computerized CJ5. Wouldn’t even consider it on today’s vehicles, unless a turn-key shop install that knows exactly what is needed, at their price. Second statement is likely correct.

That's the one, they would give you credit for having the transmission already, "Lite Brite" took their OEM 392 and swapped a Demon crate engine in it place and got credit for the base 392 block. I haven't checked out the weight between the diesel and the 392 but I would imagine the relatively close. Winning and if I ever do this I would hope this suspension setup that I've built up to this point would be a close match. Not a fan of spacers or hockey pucks or anything of the kind. I built mine eliminating the rake caused by the heavy diesel block.

I checked the Rubitrux cost and it was like 32k for a swap to 392. Way out of my price range but guess it is all factory parts and setup.
