I have a JL Sport S with an automatic transmission (about a month old from the factory). Last night the engine stalled almost immediately after I started up and put the gear in to the drive (D). When I restarted the engine the gear was stuck in P and wouldn’t go to D. I was able to shift the gear to D eventually after about 20 seconds or so and drive home. But all the while I was driving (about 15 miles) there was a warning light right above the fuel gage (the auto start/stop icon with an exclamation mark). I came home and turned off the engine. When I turned it on again within about a minute, the warning light disappeared. This was the first time it happened. Has anyone experienced anything similar? Hope this was one off event. Should I take it to a dealer for service?

That's an ESS system fault. Start with the simple things like making sure all your fuses are seated properly in the box under the hood.

Wow didn't realize the odometer/tach screen looks so different from a Base Sport. Did you get a tech package or is this stock with the Sport S?

As far as I know, I have a “regular” Sport S (I adjusted backlighting). As for my ESS problem, I have checked all my fuses, and they’re fine (nothing lose I could see). I ran an OBD diagnostic, and it listed “DTC P06EF Engine Restart Performance.” I will be taking it to a local dealer to get it serviced. Will post their findings and any repairs done.

The cluster display is the same display in both the Sport and Sport S. You have to upgrade to the tech package to get the larger cluster display shown in this thread that is standard on the sahara and rubicon. The tech option is only available on the Sport S. It also includes the larger 7” UConnect 4 center display with apple car play and android auto.

Ahh okay, so it is because of the Tech package then?

That is correct - a Sport S with the Tech package also receives a color display in the instrument cluster, similar to what the Sahara & Rubicons have.

Ever get closure on this? I have a JLUR with <1,000 miles (same color, btw). Just previous to the issue, I was on cruise control for 45 mins (not sure if related). Exited the freeway at a traffic signal and the whole Jeep jerked - I thought I got hit from behind. All other symptoms are like what you wrote. My VIN is outside the U87 recall band. Looking for answers...

Yes and no. Contacted a Jeep dealer shortly afterward and described the problem. Was told that it would be difficult to find out the cause, if the problem didn’t persist. Also was told something like “it’s a new model and I should give it some time for all the new technology to settle...” which I thought was kind of bogus. I read on this forum to make sure to check the fuse box and secure all of them in place. I did that, and my Jeep hasn’t stalled since (I now have about 4,500 miles on the clock).

Well, having said that my Apple CarPlay just stopped working today (was working fine). CarPlay icon doesn’t even show up. Don’t know if it has anything to do with the fact that I have recently updated my phone to iOS 12...

wow can't believe I found this thread!

My '18 Rubicon had the same issue as you described (14k miles). Took it into the dealer and they pulled a P06EF code (Engine Restart Performance, https://www.dtcdecode.com/Jeep/P06EF). They flashed the PCM software and say that's the fix...but I'm not convinced. All the causes per the decoder appear to be mechanical. I have noticed my ESS system taking longer to be "ready" since I first purchased it. I feel the main and or aux batteries are the issue (I have tow package as well).

I'll check my fuses...can't hurt.
