My 2021 has gained an intermittent engine rattle. It will go a few cycles without doing it and then does it all the time for a few cycles. I haven't been able to get under it with the creeper yet, but I have opened the hood and held down various plastic parts and head shields(like the drivers side upper control are shield) and the rattle is still there. I am hoping that someone else had this issue and can help me narrow down where to look when I finally have the time to get under it.

Not sure if you can hear it over the engine, but there is a distinct rattle noise that is more pronounced in certain parts of the video.

Check your exhaust. I had one of the brackets on the exhaust break at the weld. Go under the front passenger's side on the Jeep, that's where mine was.

Thank you, you saved me some time searching for it! This is exactly what it was. Bracket was completely split from the weld.

Because I’m dumb (and apparently blind) could you please circle or highlight the split weld in your picture? I have a noise I’m trying to hunt down.

TIA

Here is a slightly different angle. The bracket is supposed to be welded at the red line, but it is not. it looks like they tried to weld this before on a previous visit. It is the downpipe coming from the engine right at its bend towards the back.

Can you weld it? Or take it to a competent muffler shop and have those guys fix it up with new bracket upgrade or something?

Looks almost like the factory did it for last moment fix or something.

I can weld it and would do it if I were out of warranty, but I have to take my Jeep in to get the ECM cloned and I want them to give look over everything before I run out of my bumper to bumper in a few thousand miles. I am not too concerned about the weld since this part is looking like it will "fall off" soon, and just want an excuse for them to look over everything.

Makes sense to get all you can now, and glad it was something relatively simple. Even if a dealer service monkey can't weld it you can probably fix it later then.

I could hear that slapping metal sound in your video almost like the poker card in a kids bicycle spokes is what it reminded me of for some reason. Anyway I had no clue what it was but better than a rod or something!

I was just under my Jeep to diagnose an exhaust rattle and found the same thing. Looks like this is a pretty common failure.

I was on a trail last weekend when I first noticed it. Thought I had picked up a rock or broken a heat shield.

Damn it, this just happened to me. I'm convinced that this not an "IF" this weld is going to fail, but "WHEN" it is going to fail.

Thinking back before the weld fails completely I noticed faint fluctuation in sound at idol when sitting at a light, nothing crazy just enough to make you glance down at the tachometer to see if there was any jumping in the rpm, but of course there wasn't any.

When that weld pops for good let me tell ya, it sounds like 4-year old kid tying a case of empty beer cans to his bicycle then hauling ass down the street. At Idle you get the racket, then when you touch the throttle the sound completely dissipates.

Thanks Anthony & TJ for posting this, with it, it took all of 30 seconds to determine that I had the same issue.

I'm not sure that this is a 3.0 specific issue, but I'll have to crawl under my daughter's 2.0 to see what it looks like.

Here are a couple more clear shots so that everyone knows what to look for when they get hit with this. .

Cheers,

Ryan
