I put five quarts of oil in mine and it sits perfectly on the max line. I can guarantee you, it takes 5 quarts. Besides, Jeep would not take the liability and put the wrong amount in the owner’s manual.

Lol, "Dipstick"! That's a great pun!

I'm with you. I lost a 3.5 Ecoboost to the tune of about $12k in our Transit van due to an oil change shop messing up and having a double gasket on the filter, causing the oil to puke out when at high pressure, grenading the engine. Fortunately, the shop owner is a stand up guy and took responsibility. He had insurance that paid for it. I still take that van to him because he is an honest guy and the oil is really hard to change on it. It is just too low to the ground. I do my own on every vehicle that is do-able at home, though.

Always double check everything.

Invoice might indicate 6qts, but they may not have used all of the 6th quart. If they opened a 6th quart and only used 3 drops, they are gonna bill you for it. OR maybe they did use all 6qts.... again, Always double check everything.

Only problem with what you said, is that most every dealer uses bulk oil when they do routine oil changes. They do not use bottles of oil usually.
Sure occasionally but not the norm.

Regardless, the JL owner needs to check to see if the JL has been over filled with oil.

I just did the first oil change myself. I have a good service dept where I bought my Jeep but even with this I just wanted to do it myself. I do an oil change and 5 tire rotation at each 5K interval.

As we all know if you want something done right, do it yourself. I won't take advantage of the free oil change / tire rotation. The cost of doing it myself is cheap and provides me with much more peace of mind. That is worth more than the free service.
Free is not always good !

I'm sitting at my local dealership (again) and writing this in the waiting area..

I always change my own oil to avoid stupid crap like this, but I'm also going to take advantage of a free oil change by a Jeep dealership when it's offered.

When I got mine back, I saw the paperwork say 6 qt for refill. I told the guy it's supposed to be 5, and he snapped back at me and said 5.5 but just shows 6 on the paper. I said fine, got in my Jeep, pulled up the manual, pulled up the Mopar site, walked straight to the service manager and after confronting him about it, even he didn't believe me. He pulled out a sheet and pointed it out and said "look, it says 6, this is directly from the manufacturer." I saw the top of the sheet and saw 2018 on it, which I pointed out and then said it's probably for a JK, and that JLs are different. He said it can't be, because the engines are the same. I told him the oil pans in the JL are smaller which is why there's less oil. He got on his computer and looked the Jeep up by VIN and he just kind of softly said, "yeah, you're right..."

Of course then he wanted to go see for himself and check the dipstick, so we walked out and did just that. He said "these dipsticks are different, they don't really tell you exactly how much over it is because of how the notches are, it's a strange thing.." so now the guy was trying to explain to me how a freaking dipstick works. I looked too and it's definitely over filled, and he was trying to convince me it was probably only half a quart because of how the stick was designed. I said, just dump the oil and put 5 back in, I don't give a rats ass what the stick, you, your goons, or Jesus says. It's over filled.

I hope all the JLs with 3.6L driving around here don't develop issues down the line because the dealership has definitely been putting 6 qts in every single one of them, hopefully until now.

I can't wait until my 4 free oil changes are used up so I don't have to put up with this crap anymore.

This is one of the main reasons I have not used the free oil changes. $40.00 gives me piece of mind it is done correctly and I know what oil is in my Jeep.

Me neither. I change my own oil in all three of my vehicles. Don’t trust anyone even if it is free.

No free oil changes for me either. No such thing as a free oil change. People arguing with service managers, wasting their time in dealerships trying to correct Jeep. I’m a enthusiast and bought a brand new Jeep I can sure afford to do an oil change myself. We belong to these forums so that we can share information and avoid problems , people seem to go out of their way to create problems. I’m a little older and experience has taught me stay away from the dealer as much as possible unless it’s something I just can’t fix then I go for the warranty and cross my fingers.

Exactly. Warranty only, no other services although I do have Ford change my diesel filters only because I don’t want to chance getting air in the lines. It’s worth the $120 bucks

I'm glad you posted this. I checked my service record and it listed 6 quarts and 5w20 too. I checked the dipstick and it appears to be way overfilled. It's into the wire of the dipstick.

Someone posted it, many of the dealers have techs used to putting 6 qts in the 3.6 ( all other models), thus over filling the JL.

I would check your jeep after it has sat overnight, if they put 6 in, it will register very high on the dip stick.

My bud who is has 20 yrs as a Mopar tech didn't even know, when I bring mine in, I will tell him to grab the 6 qts of the syn Penz ultra and pour in 5 and give me the other qt :).

I havnt had my Jeep in for the wave free oil changes as yet, have changed it a few time myself.

Here’s a better question for you where in manual does it say 6 ? , You and your jeep Dealer both disagree with our 5 quart recommendation so you must have a reason for disagreeing so ask your jeep dealer that put in 6 to show you the documentation or show us a manual where it says 6 we all say 5 prove us wrong.
Why do we have to prove to you that we are right ?
