Hey Everyone,

I have a '21 JLU Willys with the eTorque engine and about 43,000 miles on it. Recently I've noticed that at idle, or in park, the engine will lurch like it is having a cylinder misfire. Its a similar feeling to when the auto start/stop turns on and off. Sometimes it will only do it once every minute or so, and sometimes it will do it several times in a few seconds. Other than that, there have been no issues will driving down the road, so it has me pretty puzzled.

Also I seem to notice it more after the engine is warm, but that could very well be a coincidence as I don't typically just sit in my Jeep while it warms up from a cold start.

I have not had a check engine light or any other issues come up on the dash. Has anyone else had this happen to them? Thanks in advance.

Don't have an eTorque engine so spit balling here.,...could it be a transition between the eTorque and the gas? Like the engine is trying to figure out where it should be operating. I could be way off just trying brainstorm ideas.

Dumb question...but could it be your AC compressor kicking on and off?

The compressor will run in defrost modes or apparently whenever the heck the HVAC system thinks it should based on input from a humidity sensor.

Not a bad question, but ill say this, if that's what it is, it would be behaving unlike any other compressor I've seen. It's also been cold and dry here, so I would be surprised if it was kicking on at all.

I have torque, if I try to make a really gentle stop by slowly reducing brake pressure as I coast to a stop, I have sometimes triggered the engine stop que, and thunk, stops. Also, I have had an occasional issue of the above, engine stops when not yet stopped, and then as I reduce brake pressure, bam, engine starts and lurches. Not a fan of etq in the wrangler, it worked better in my 1500

I had this happen in my truck. Took a while to figure out. While doing so, I eventually got a check engine light that would flash and go back off. Turned out to be a coil pack. It happened again a month or so later except I noticed it happen and then the check engine light started flashing. I expected it would so I ordered all of them. Never happened again.

Now that you mention that, it does seem like behavior of failing coils. With my mileage, maybe I should just pull the plugs and do a full change.

If you’re capable and get some kind of enjoyment out of it, not a bad idea. Of course there’s a 50% chance you could just swap the coil out if you could identify which cylinder it is. There’s probably nothing wrong with your plugs at 43k unless one cracked, which would be highly unusual.

I have a 2018 JLU Sahara with the eTorque engine & about 39k miles. Experienced similar symptoms on cold start-up although mine was actually backfiring (a popping sound). Underway it felt like one or more cylinders were loading up & indicated gas mileage was in the low teens. A foot to the floor acceleration run temporarily smoothed things out and (almost) restored normal mileage (low 20s) but everything repeated at the next cold start.

(Never a check Engine light)

My initial assumption was bad gas so I added a can of Seafoam at each of the next two fill-ups but there was no detectable improvement so I decided it was probably going to require professional diagnosis.

After agonizing for a week (take it to my dealer or a good indy shop) the problem (mostly) resolved itself. Why? No idea. Still getting some roughness at cold start but mileage is back to 22-23.

Then I received the CSN Y40 Control Module Software Updates notice. Hmmm.. maybe related??

Hopefully the Update resolves the issue..

Did you change your plugs?

At 43,000 miles I’d be tempted at throwing plugs at it. If it’s still happening, I find someone with a scanner and take a look at what the cylinders are doing. Could me a weak coil or weak injector too.

Haven't changed my plugs yet, I will report back when I do. Although my symptoms are no where near as severe as what you have seemed to experienced. I just seem to have the issue at warm idle RPMs.

Did you ever figure out the issue? We have a ā€˜21 JLU Sahara with the etorque and it started to do the same around the time you posted this issue

If it's at idle, or in park, doesn't sound like anything etorque related. I'd rule out ignition then maybe injection issues before thinking about the etorque system.

I don’t think it’s etorque related unless it’s a software issue. I’m thinking either bad gas or failing coil pack, but without a code to pinpoint a cylinder it makes it hard to replace the coil unless you just want to blindly dump $700 bucks
