Totally depends on conditions. this was my buddies and it was one long moab trip...It wasn't wrapped in plastic cellophane inside your airbox, was it? Looks brand-new otherwise, unless that's the new one you just received.
Iirc, the owner's manual says to replace the engine air filter every 3 years for the 2.0T and 3.6L engines. If your old filter still looks like new, I'd change it out anyway (if due) and just keep the old one as a backup.
