I did not participate in combat. I drove for KBR from Camp Arifjan to TDC mostly. finished my contract, collected my bonus and GTFO.
None the less, I saw a lot of things I cannot unsee. I watched a friend, among others give all.
People can say all they want, but without PMCs, shitts creek would have been flowing a lot faster, uncontrollably.

Used to secure logpacks and escorts them up MSR Sword (Between our normal Battlespace patrols,DUSTWUN ops, HVT raids with TF Mako and the Virgian Army. Played baseball driving around looking for a certain "Ping" then hopping out and good squaring the poor sap with the baseball) Actually there's a video on YouTube of us laying the smack down with TOWs, MK19s and .50s. The guy filming was a contractor hauling fuel.....He mentions had it of been a PMC they would have just cut and run. But the Strykers.....and My Battalion had a motto "Find the Bastards and pile on!" Absolutely brings me peace and joy just rolling with the top and doors off and the music playing. It is a great place to be in. Of all the vehicles I have had including motorcycles, the Jeep can just bring a calmness and a sense of enjoyment like no other vehicle. The bonus is a decent set of shades and drop the windshield too. Just cursing.

One of the best feeling there is.

I get that same rush on solo drives; it feels like my brain finally exhales. On tougher days, I’ve paired those drives with some support from PTSD I’ve used before, and the combo really helped me stay grounded. For me, the open road, fresh air, and a good playlist almost work like a reset button. It’s wild how something so simple can quiet the noise for a while.

My most peaceful place post war is walking in the woods with my pup. She's a bit over 12 now so the walks are shorter in length, and sometimes longer in duration, but more meaningful.

I have issues with PTSD and emotional control at times and I have noticed there a few things that actually overwhelm those responses.

Watching my kid play will do it. Rolling by myself in the Jeep brings me peace and a similar feeling. Same with working in the garage and hanging with my wife when we're in tune with each other.

Thought I'd write this down while I was thinking about it because I know others struggle with things, too, and if community brings that out for you, too, just know it's normal; embrace it.

We lost 43 Blackwater brothers in combat and over a 100 to illness, suicide, etc... since coming home.

Anyway, love the emotional response something like this brings you. Means you're still in there.

Interesting thread. First off, thank all you vets for your service and to your family for their support. I am a veteran but never served in combat and consider myself lucky I do not have PTSD issues. I do know people who have PTSD and it can be difficult for them. I was in the service during the Cold War and the beginning of Viet Nam. I lost 3 close high school classmates in the Viet Nam war and a number of members in my unit. Because of my job my family and friends only knew what country I was in but didn’t know exactly where or what I was doing there. I could only send generic letters home and they were mailed through a regular PO Box not an APO. It really bothered me that I couldn’t communicate effectively with them and it caused my wife and family anxiety. A lack of information really bothered them.

Driving is a release for my wife and I from the day to day happenings in life. I have always enjoyed driving and in about a month it will be 66 years ago that I got my license (yes I am old). I have had a lot of cars and trucks over the years and enjoyed a lot of them but the best one by far is the Jeep. I get a smile on my face just walking up to it. After all these years and a LOT of miles we still enjoy just driving. To where - nowhere in particular, just somewhere.
