The owners manual says to wait 5 minutes after a warm engine is shut off to check the oil level. Checking it immediately after shutting the engine off will result in a low reading and waiting too long will result in a high reading.
On my 2.0 I did an oil and filter change I knew the correct amount of oil, 5 qts, was in the engine. I warmed up the engine and checked for leaks. I turned the engine off and after 5 minutes I checked the oil and it was at the top of the hash marks. I let it sit overnight and checked the level again. It was about 1.5 inches above the top of the hash marks. I dimpled the dipstick where the level was and now I have a secondary reference for checking it when its sat overnight.
Another tip I've picked up is to flip it over to read it as well. While there are no marks on the back side of the dip stick, it's usually easier to read the level if the front has those streaks.
I would assume it's a quart low. But the hatch marks are supposed to be "safe" range. I have several vehicles that look identical but the section is that exact size for a reason, it's not a random measure. Quart low is my bet.
Warm your engine up to normal operating temperature. On level ground turn your engine off. Wait 5 minutes and check the level. When full, it should be at the top of the hash marks.
