Im very new to the forums, I'm looking for a nice roof rack but nothing to break to the bank

https://www.ebay.com/p/16026867208?iid=193271689301&rt=nc#UserReviews

i found this but reviews are saying it rubs on the roof and destroys it does anyone know anything about it?
Hey Sal.

IMHO, the limiting factors with roof racks like this that attach to the hard top's rain gutters is both the commitment to only run the hard top (i.e. to marry a roof rack to a specific top and preclude running topless--which may not be an issue for you) and the limited weight the rain gutters can hold.

To the second point, MOPAR recommends no more than 150 lbs with their kit https://www.quadratec.com/p/mopar/removable-roof-rack-kit-jeep-wrangler-jl so please consider both the amount of gear and its weight you might need to haul before making a purchase.

Here is a good thread to start with. https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/the-roof-rack-list-jl-jlu-wrangler.2665/

What might be useful as well is if you express your price range and whether you are willing to drill holes into the hard top to install your rack.

Please also appreciate that some of the weight in your linked design may be placed upon the rear "wind foil" design on the back of the JL's hard top. It may even place pressure on the back windshield. This rear area where the rear window hinges isn't one designed for repeated install/de-installs, so this rack really isn't designed to come on and off like one solely attached to rain gutters.

I'm curious what others have to say about this product's features and others that fit your parameters.

Cheers. : - )

The EAG roof rack got mixed reviews on the JK forums: some Jeep owners loved it —within its obvious limitations; others claimed it was cheap Chinese cr*p.

All I can say is: I’d be careful before drilling through the fiberglass hardtop, as some of the higher-priced roof racks require. That’s a non-reversible step which, depending where you live, can create its own water leak opportunities.

thank you so much for the info!! i really appreciate it. i def don't want to drill holes on on the roof and its not going to be for too much weight i like to go camping and the max weight i would be putting is like 80-100 pounds (ie cooler, water jug, bigger items that can't fit in the car). Its insane too how many options are out there it can be overwhelming

Sal:

I'm really thinking that in your case the MOPAR hard top rain gutters, or a similar 3rd party JL specific mechanism of attachment, along with a non-vehicle specific roof rack that can attach to these rails is your best play in light of your needs--specifically size and weight of gear.

This minimizes your JL specific investment, allowing a rack to be moved to another vehicle need be, and facilitates having the rack on only when you need it: which sounds like far more the exception that the rule.

Happy and safe trails wherever you go.

Another thing Sal:

Let me share with you where my head was when looking at this rack you linked.

It reminded me of Topsy brand's excellent pair of hooks to facilitate lifting the hard top off. https://topsyproducts.com/products/hinge-hoist-bracket-kit-jl-bracket-only

While this has nothing to do with your specific needs it shares commonality with the rack you linked I believe in use of the existing rear window hinge points.

A while back, when asking Topsy about this product, they indicated to me that this should be considered a permanent install. And this is why I am forced to conclude the same with your linked rack, whose weight and/or drag, for the vast majority of time not used, may eat into your MPGs.

Cheers.

I have been waiting for an aluminum(no rust issues) rack, something light like the old VW racks. Roof gutter mounted is fine if the weight is kept to a minimum. Maybe three mounts per side to spread the weight. I do not want a 100+ lb. rack to start with. I played around with the idea of this old school rail idea. Just couldn't pull the trigger drilling holes to mount it but it only weighs 6 lbs. and costs like $50 It is a RV roof rack and easily cut down to customize the size. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Strombe...VEr3sCh3CuwspEAQYAyABEgIqBfD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

This may come as no surprise to you Ben but I hear issues with drilling the top and whether leaks result are far more a product of the meticulous nature of the install.

Then again, from a cosmetic and permanent standpoint I completely get desire you may have to not change your rig (i.e. drill) in ways that can't be reversed.

Thanks for sharing this link. It looks like a product perfect for the JL owner wishing to transport relatively light and small amounts of gear and I suspect is bound to be much less expensive and lighter than a Gobi of LOD Off Road type setup that attaches outside the roof.

Plus aluminum is much much more resistant to rust! : - )
