We just got a 2023 Sahara 4xe. Is it possible to drive it like a “typical” gas engine for long distances without plugging in? We plan on a long trip and may not have access to any chafing stations for like two weeks. Can we drive the 4Xe in e-save mode and it have to charge the battery until we get back? Will it damage the system?

Finally as far as mileage goes..Hownos the “49mpg” achieved? is it displayed in the “average mpg” display or is that just the gas engine mpg? Must admit after 19 wranglers this is a bit of a learning curve.

If you know you will not be charging I would e-save Hold, with about 80% of the battery.

I also would not use e-save Charge, it will kill your mpg, and there is no benefit.

You can drive as much as you like without charging the 4xe.

I just prefer driving "gas mode" with battery charge than it being <1%, but that's just my preference.

You can always plug in the level 1 wall charger that came with the Wrangler, if you get access to a 120 outlet, especially if you can do it overnight.

It's not 49mpg, it's 49MPGe.

Driving using gas will probably get you around 19-20mpg, when using gas it's about the same mpg as the regular Wranglers.

I was at a cottage a few weeks ago, thought I was going to be driving pure gas the whole trip.

The highway long run getting there I did e-save Hold, then the country roads, I just let it run Hybrid.

Got to the cottage and there was a 120 outlet that worked.

So I was driving around the local areas and trails in pure electric, plugging in when it was parked, finally drove back home e-save Hold until I exited the highway.

We should sticky this reply at the top of the 4xe subforum. This handful of sentences answers a majority of questions I see here!

If you’re not saving the battery charge for any particular use (camping, silent running) just leave it in Hybrid mode and forget it.

I recently completed a 4300 mile trip without charging at all.

Interestingly, 190 of those miles were all-electric. The system sorted it out just fine.

Our Jeeps are always in hybrid regardless of switch setting. I would just run it in Hybrid mode with max regen, unless you will need/want battery saved for range issues between fuel stops etc. Watch the Hybrid energy page in the different modes to see differences in charging and battery usage. The 1% and 100% is usable, not actually battery level. The electronics are pretty smart, until they aren't.

One thing I do like when in “max regen” is the alternate braking effect when going downhill. Not only does it charge but it holds the vehicle from coasting freewheel down an incline..saves brake pads.

E-save mode is only really useful for one thing:

Charging (or keeping charged) the battery on the way up to an offroading trip, so you can have all of it available to use on the trails.

There's really no other value in using it at all in day to day driving. It's a very inefficient way to charge the battery, it's far more efficient to leave it in the normal Hybrid mode and let the hybrid system do its thing.

To answer your question about if there's any concern with driving it in hybrid mode for long distances, no, there is no concern. The hybrid system is smart enough to automatically use, not use, and charge the battery as needed to keep everything operating smoothly and optimizing mpg, over any driving distance.

Today for example I was leaving the city core and heading to another city core 10 miles away, I drove electric, about half a mile to the highway, I put it in e-save Hold, I was at 80% get off the highway, I'm in Hybrid now, drove around in low speed traffic for about 3 hours, I was at 25%, so I put it in e-save Hold to hit the highway for another 10 miles back home, I exited the highway put it in electric, got to the charger with 5%, and I will charge it up.

Sometimes on cold winter days or rainy days, when the windows are fogging up, I use e-save Charge to keep the engine on all the time for heat and defogging, it's maybe 10 days a year, and I don't really care about efficiency at those times. Typically I drive well over 90% pure ⚡.
