Recently I towed a small camp trailer a few hundred miles. At one point when I was nearing my last opportunity to buy gas before getting to hunting camp, I switched the e-save mode to charge, figuring I could bump up the electric range a bit. After getting gas, it wouldn't let me switch back to regular e-save; I'd hit the button, it would select it for about 5 seconds, and then switch back to charge. After sitting overnight, it finally allowed me to switch out of charge and I had no other issues (but hell no, I am not going to hit charge again on a trip like that; I used so much gas I ended up having to make a special trip back into town).

Anyone else had this happen? Anything I can do to prevent it from happening again?

Nope, but your most efficient use of gas would have been to stay in hybrid instead of using extra gas to minimally charge the battery.
I would expect you would be able to change the settings after a restart though.

I wanted to preserve as much of the electric range as I could for a week and a half off grid, which is why I went with e-save for the trip over. At home, I primarily use electric or hybrid.

Being unable to switch between hold and charge has happened to me a few times (on a 2024); it's really annoying.

I’ve tried the e-save charge mode a few times and didn’t see any significant battery charging - less than I get from driving down long mountain roads. I probably won’t mess with it again as it does not seem to be a very efficient way to charge the battery, not even close. Happily on dirt roads the ICE switches off frequently enough in hybrid mode that I can enjoy the quiet electric propulsion (with the exception of the front speaker which I am going to disconnect someday).

I burn the battery down to around 25% then use e-save maintain when towing the trailer long distance. Helps keep engine temps down in the mountains when the Jeep has more reserve than when the battery indicator shows empty.

E-save is quite literally just there for wanting to use the battery later. As you experienced unless you're coasting down mountain roads the effective charge rate is almost nil.

As for oddness of switching between the two styles I wouldn't think much of it. Just electrical gremlins that come with the platform

Yeah, I don't use e-save either, but I can see how it would be helpful if you want to save your charge for offroad. Like the others, if I'm taking a trip farther than 20 miles I'll just put it in hybrid. My dealer actually advised me to do this.

I will say that I absolutely adore the Max Regen mode and keep it on all the time. It's such a small thing, but it makes me very happy to see the battery charge going up when I'm traveling down the mountain roads. I believe that it worked differently in prior model years, but in the 2024 it does continue to charge while the ACC is on.

Max gen took a bit of getting used to, but mine is on all the time, too. I hardly use brakes at all but I am not an accelerate like hell, slam on your brakes at the next light type of driver.

One thing I need to learn is how the system works in 4L on a tougher dirt trails. Max gen seems to compete with ICE deceleration and brakes for slowing down.

Very curious. We did two ~1500 feet climbs in the Sierra this weekend. Both in hybrid mode, mostly in 4L and with max gen switched on. Each climb generated nearly 10% battery charge. I guess this was from all the small accelerations and decelerations but I am surprised I generated electricity going uphill.

Tried 4L without max gen a few times but overall I like the deceleration it provides when switched on.

I also used the low gear cruise control (whatever it’s called) a couple times. It does what it supposed to if you’re going very slow but the feeling is the Jeep might drive off the cliff by itself - kind of weird.
