I want to make a bunch of updates to my 4xe for battery storage and use, but am a little confused about the options. I have the stock primary and aux batteries today. I intend to add various exterior lights, dual compressor, winch, fridge and would like to be able (if possible) to run an electric cooktop or even a a/c when camping among other things. I know I can't run anything off the 4xe battery under the rear seats. Should I buy something like the Redarc DC battery charge and just use it to keep the aux battery charged? I can't run the winch off that but should be able to run everything else (except a cooktop) right? What about buying a lithium battery and inverter and running that in the back - and then I could plug in solar panels if I'm overlanding.

I guess what I'm asking is what is the "dream" battery setup that will allow me to run just about anything and store a lot of power for overlanding? Has anyone ever tried this?

The 4xe does not come with an Auxiliary battery. There is a 12V battery under the hood that powers the computers, cabin, lights and so forth. Then there is the 400V battery under the rear seat that drives the electric propulsion motor.

Yeah, no way to tap into the high voltage battery directly. It is used to charge the 12V battery, but is somewhat mysterious about when and to what state of charge it will actually charge it. It's totally possible to kill your 12V battery with sustained loads, even while your HV battery is full.

Adding an auxiliary battery to the cargo compartment is accomplished just like it would be on any other Jeep or other vehicle.

Awesome setup. Exactly what i want to do. I have a few questions. Can I ping you periodically as I build this out if I'm stuck? Also, where did you install the inverter and what are you using this for? Did you add another battery under the hood?

Here’s how I set up my battery and inverter setup:

https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/4xe-camping-machine.95200/

Using the Dometic PLB40 for the fridge has simplified things greatly, as it allows for placing the fridge anywhere in camp.

The 1000w inverter allows for tools and charging, and the upgraded 12v doubles capacity and provides peace of mind. The 400v HV battery is doing the heavy lifting, but this system seems to work.

Solar seems unnecessary if one can maintain enough charge in the Jeep, and you’re driving every 2-3 of days.

Please post pics.

@madkins1868 I installed the Genesis Dual Battery kit in my 4xe. Detailed write-up here: https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/fo...ing-genesis-dual-battery-system-in-4xe.76402/

I happened to have this kit from my prior Jeep, but if I was starting fresh, and didn’t already have dual battery kit in hand, I might just choose to use a single deep-cycle battery as a replacement for the 12V battery under the hood. This wouldn’t give quite the capacity, but it would save a ton of money. And the HV hybrid battery can be used to periodically charge up the 12V battery under the hood. You might want to read through that entire thread that I linked, as I felt the dual battery approach is “overkill” for most use cases.
