Does anyone make a DOT approved third brake light ring that goes behind the spare? Preferably one that just plugs in instead of needing a splice

I doubt it. The DOT regulations are pretty specific. That's why the 3rd high center light is placed above the spare. While cool, the behind the tire lights are always partially obstructed and don't meet the DOT rules

That's a shame. I got a terraflex HD carrier and the wire to the third brake light is just long enough. Removing it and putting it back takes more finesse then i really have in my gorilla hands. Plus I worry about the connector breaking.

Same. That’s my only complaint about the carrier. Could probably extend the harness a bit by splicing in some additional wire? Maybe even switch the connector out for a different type?

There will probably be lots of opinions on this, I encourage you to look up both federal and state laws to make your choice.

MY INTERPRETATION is that federal law requires all new vehicles to be sold with a working 3rd brake light as a solid burning lamp. After that, federal law no longer applies, and it is up to state law. In my state for example, a center light is not required, therefore the light being DOT approved is irrelevant.

Splicing a longer cable is an option. I'm also wondering if I could just reroute it outside of the carrier and if it would be enough. I also thought about just removing it and taking the risk, but was hoping for a more legit solution. I still may resort to that.

Man, the things we do for our rides.
