So I replaced one of my Door Lock Latches this past week…..

I did quite a bit of searching leading up to the replacement, and I couldn’t find anywhere where someone had provided any details for the JL on the latch replacement specifically. I found plenty of JK resources, though they were useless.

I figured I would at least post something here with some information in case anyone else ever has to do it. ~$70 for the Door Lock Latch ordered from AMP.com. 68282960AA

Overall, it was not terribly difficult, but you need to go slow and just take your time. Theres a lot of plastic at play here. Don't rush it. Specifically, I had to replace my power right rear door lock latch. It pretty much quit working one day and eventually annoyed me enough to replace it. I had thought for a long time it was wiring being stretched or something wiring related in the door, until I listened to the sound the lock made when activated (stuttering and not one clean “click” motion like it should) which indicated to me the whole latch itself was just dead or broken.

Pretty much the entirety of the door guts needs to be taken out and removed from the door itself. Start with the inner large plastic door panel, it's screws, disconnect the handle and lock, and go from there. Then remove the carrier plate panel, unbolt the window from regulator plate, remove the screws that go into the lock from the door, etc…

You then need to remove the exterior door handle, its handle cap, AND loosen the screw which holds the door handle bracket inside the door to the door itself where the handle goes in to. If you don’t remove that, you’ll have a hard time getting things lined up and in place. it was pretty upsetting how janky and cheap all these plastic components were.

Finally, for the latch replacement: you replace only the white plastic lock mechanism, and so you need to remove it from the latch presenter. It has some plastic locking tabs that you release it from. Go slow here. You will break one if you don’t and you’ll have to buy a latch presenter as well.
For the power lock, you of course have one connector. You also remove the two cords for the lock and handle as well to remove the old lock entirely. If you are worried about breaking these tabs, buy a new latch presenter. Its like $11 at the time of this post.

Attached some pictures below. My whole goal here is to just help someone with a little more information than I was able to find, and provide a place for questions if needed, as many don't have access to tech sheets or whatever. I suspect there will be more than just me doing this.

Good luck!
