Does this paint quote seem realistic or excessive?

Why are paint supplies and body supplies billed hourly?
It’s an estimation of the cost of paint and materials based on the number of refinishing hours. This is standard practice in body shops.

That's pretty descriptive. I don't see battery cables or anything on the underbody included. I thought I could help you out, but sounds like you don't need help. Thanks.
Door hinge corrosion? Seems like the most likely answer based on the estimate.

Sooooooo

Got a second opinion today….
Notice there’s no repair time on anything except one door. He’s only painting the right side of the Jeep, replacing the hinges, and blending into the right fender, and plans to blend the repair into the rear door. He’s just replacing the hinges on the left and painting the hinges themselves on that side.

The non-reusable door weatherstrip clearly isn’t coming off or being replaced. Top isn’t coming off.

I don’t know if this is cause to be worried, or if he’s estimating very neatly around the damage. Really hard to say. Is there corrosion on the left side doors? Or just the hinges?

So I never saw any paint corrosion on any of the doors except the front passenger. All other corrosion was just the hinges. The first painter said there was corrosion next to the inside seem on the other doors…it was very very minor but I could see what he was talking about….this second painter said that wasn’t corrosion and instead it was just overspray from the door sealants/bonding?

I looked at the first estimate and thought, wow, that's not just for door hinge corrosion, not based on that estimate!

lol that’s what I thought too. I did talk with the guy and he was actually the body man that used to work for the jeep dealership that’s paying for half of the job….he even has one of their sort booths. He shot it to me pretty straight. He told me some areas the other guy said were corrosion were not corrosion and that he’s been painting for over 30 years and has never had one jeep returned to him with problems he fixed. That sounded pretty good to me!
Ask if they will warranty the fix. If the corrosion comes back because they didn't replace the parts that Jeep replaces will they fix it again?

I had my half doors and hinges painted Billet this summer. I removed all the moulding, handles, hinges, etc. The prices ranged from $1,600 to $3,000 for paint only, no labor for tearing apart and reassembling. I went with the $1,600 at a BMW certified paint and body shop. You may want to requote with you doing all of the labor and just handing the doors to them. I actually went around with the blank door and hinges to the shop to show them that it was paint and light prep only.

Who remembers Earl Scheib… “I’ll paint any car for $29.95 (1950s)”. In the 90s, it was $99.95.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earl_Scheib
When I was a police officer, I had to make a call to an Earl Scheib about 15 years ago, yep there was one still around. Young female soldier bought a very nice 2 door Mazda 6 that was about 10 years old with low miles. Perfect inside, only burnt clear coat on the dark green paint outside. She asked around about where she could get it fixed cheap and wound up at Earl Scheib in San Antonio.

When I got there she was angry and crying. She asked me to look at here car and it looked terrible. The paint was a non matching dark green, 80 grit sand paper swirls visible through the paint. Emblems and rubber trim painted. Orange peel and fish eyes everywhere, git and dirt in the paint. The manager said she got what she paid for, a $400 complete repaint. I had to agree with him, and told her that she was lucky they didn't paint the tires. Her car was now worth thousands less than it was before.

Lesson, check their work before you allow any shop to begin on your vehicle, no matter if the quote is high or low.

Ask if they will warranty the fix. If the corrosion comes back because they didn't replace the parts that Jeep replaces will they fix it again?
Good point to bring up. Parts purchased from Jeep should come with some kind of warranty, usually like a year. But they could theoretically come back and say if the new hinges corrode that it's the body shop's fault and how they were prepped, or something like that.

OP should ask what kind of warranty is provided on the work, and get it in writing. When accident claims are run through insurance, typically the insurance will warranty the shop's work for the lifetime of the vehicle to the current owner if they use a contracted shop. Including a warranty (if there isn't one, standard) could be a negotiation in these discussions.
