Does anyone actually like start-stop

My last two BMWs have had ESS. The previous was an X1 automatic, and the current is a 435i 6MT. I don't mind it in either car, and BMW's ESS is universally panned as one of the most abrupt and noisy systems. I can understand the concerns mentioned by some posters about merging, but living in hilly, high traffic Orange County CA I've never had a problem.

I think it's one of those "I've never had a car with it, so I'm going to hate it just because".

20 years from now (if ICEs are still being made) people won't even remember a time before ESS, BLIS, auto braking, and other features.

When it's really cold, or really hot, turn it off. When it's not, leave it on. What's so hard about that?

The systems are designed to reduce emissions and increase efficiency. From my understanding an ICE is most efficient at full throttle and moderate load, and least efficient while idling. In a recent article idling cars in the US were estimated to waste 3.9 BILLION gallons of gas per year.

Test drove a manual. Needed to "creep" up to fill a gap when in a line to turn right and stalled it. I think I just needed to be more deliberate with pressing the clutch and making sure it started before doing the slight clutch slip without giving it gas. Other than that I thought it was fairly smooth and I think I'll generally like having it as my commute is a lot of 45-50 mph roads that have long stoplights. With slow stop and go with a lot of creeping I'll probably turn it off. I wonder if BSG/etorque would have helped in my situation above.

I ordered the tow package and will be using a lit receiver plug. Two benefits... the plug acts as an additional brake light and also disables the ESS!
Jeep doesn't want the ESS running while towing a trailer so the tow harness disables ESS when an electric circuit is plugged in.

I read on here that if you plug in a fake trailer harness it defeats ESS. Like one of those hitch covers with light-up eyeballs or something.

Read that on this forum and then a few other posts that say that doing so does not disable ESS.

Hopefully, somebody will go out and buy that skull thing you posted a pic or similar and get off their arse and try it... then post here with a it does or it doesn't finding.

I'm off my arse but have no JL/JLU to test with.

Even tire pressure all around to help with emissions and fuel , ESS to help with emissions and Fuel ..........Cmon guys - Its been in the news for the past 10 years or better . They want us to get use to it .....Muscle memory keeps us from wanting to change .

One valid point was made earlier on heating and cooling ......Im in the deep south with summers in the high 90's with AC blowing to keep me from passing out ..........Then again I guess this would be the time to hit the ESS button ??

I live in Texas...it’s not THAT cold... don’t make comments inferring people don’t like it just because it’s new...or cool to not like this change. People have VALID reasons for not liking it. Don’t try to minimize my issue by saying it’s a simple fix. Don’t infer that I’m too lazy to turn it off....NOBODY wants to get in their jeep and hit multiple buttons every Time they drive.....that’s why people are already trying to find work-around....You probably work for some EPA program to push their emission agenda.

As long as I wouldn’t necessarily mind it on an auto car, I don’t want it on my manual. When I read things like « if you don’t put it in neutral it won’t engage », or « if you don’t fully stop it won’t wngage », I don’t like it.
I don’t wanna end up adjusting my way of driving so it doesn’t bother me, cause this sounds like something that would end up in a fender bender.... It should be off when you start your car, with a switch to turn it on for people who love it. Standard engine should be the norm, and this « add-on/improvement » to some, should be optional

I experienced my first ESS when I test drove a JLUR. I had a little micro panic when the engine died. Then something like fingernails on a chalk board when I took my foot off the brake and it restarted. I'm the guy who bump starts my Jeep at every opportunity, so this tech bugs me. The other thing is, when the JL gets over 100k miles, how reliable will a split second restart be in traffic?

I'm starting to wonder how reliable a JL is going to be with any decent odometer reading. My expectations are low enough that I'll be very happy if I get a reliable 75k out of it.

I'm probably gonna hit that start stop off switch every time I jump in the thing.

Or better yet, an option in the menus to choose yourself whether the default is On or Off.

Doesnt bother me at all. Was a bit unnerving at first because I thought I stalled it (M/T), but no longer. It restarts when you engage the clutch. I have tried - I cannot even attempt a fast start without the engine starting before I get the clutch all the way in, into first gear, and going. There is no performance lag at all.

Jeep is going to have a difficult time going forward with environmental regulations. They have to squeeze every mpg out of all of their cars in order to meet EPA standards. Get used to it. We are lucky to still have a wrangler with all of the crap these car companies are having to satisfy to keep regulators off their backs.
