Dana also makes heavier covers as I posted. The difference is Heavy diff covers prevent housing flex which prevents gear deflection. It’s not about impact protection as most people seem to think. A diff skid does not replace a heavy diff cover it is only meant to work with it.
my concern is always about the lubrications side of it.

I have no heat/lube issues with the Dana cast covers. I have seen first had what gear deflection can do.

100% recommend getting your self a good brand of rock slider or you will at some point put the willy's rock rail into the body and cause a nice size dent. ask me how i know. i currently have both lower door seal body damage. i went out and paid more than i wanted for a good set of frame mounted rock sliders and it has save my jeep more than wroth the $$ spent on them.
Agreed. Went with Lod signature rock sliders.

Does the rubicon come with heavier diff covers?

If you are not ready or wanting to go on difficult trails, I say stick with stock. Diff skids are a simple piece of mind. I have been on more than several challenging trails with OEM set up… before and now lifted.

Best thing is to first learn better lines, using a spotter if possible and understand how to avoid hitting your pumpkin and your lower shock mounts. I see many newbies avoiding driving over rocks. That is the key… put your rubber on the high points and the rocks between them won’t be in play.

For moderate trails, diff skids should be enough to protect your diffs from scrapes and impacts. Diff covers are more for heavy-duty protection, especially if you're hitting tougher trails or rocks regularly. Rancho skids are a solid choice.

I can’t believe how many people have never heard of gear deflection. Ever see a ring gear with all the tips of the teeth broken off. Thats gear deflection. Heavy covers do much more then protect from impacts.

Based on your post. Maybe go for a Rubicon take-off lift. Save up and get some 33's with a bit of offset. And just have fun!!!! Go slow, use your spotter, and be amazed what a mostly stock jeep can do!!!!

A couple of skids isn't going to change how you wheel. And skids have a lot of downsides too!

But if you decide to go bigger... plan it all out ahead of time... have an end picture in mind and build to that plan. Know what you are getting into!

Enjoy!
