I had a rat in my garage this summer. No evidence that he got in the Jeep, no damage anywhere and nothing on the camera. But he tormented me for a month. Caught him on a glue trap, but he just dragged it around until he could pull himself off. Set off plenty of snap traps, but never got him. Electric trap didn't work, although I really wanted it to. One night saw him on the camera running around like crazy, and then never saw him again. It looked like he was running from something. So weird, and also unsatisfying because I wanted to see a dead rat.

I can't help you much, because I think rats might be smarter than I am after my experience this summer. But a pest guy told me to bait traps but don't set them. Once it gets comfortable enough to eat off the traps (couple of days), then set it. According to the expert, that never fails.

Try this. Less than 10 bucks to make and works like a charm. It also can get more than 1. 5 gal bucket, 1 1/2 inch PVC pipe , steel dowel and a scrap piece of wood as a ramp with some peanut butter. This little shit scurried into my garage. it was a 1 night stay. Just don’t put too much water in the bucket or they might be able to escape. A little more than a third full does the trick.

Oh I was really hoping this was not what the thread was actually about. I was hoping it was click bait or something. I'm really sorry but you'll have to burn the entire jeep to the ground now.

peanut butter on a mousetrap under the hood or wherever it's chewing things up. they'll come for miles at the smell of peanut butter lol

On the bright side, he's probably made a really cozy nest up in there somewhere with all that foam.

Went off road Friday afternoon and I have ample evidence of a rat that has taken up residence.

I’m trying to keep calm about how potentially destructive this has/could be.

While I was underneath by the exhaust down pipe I’m pretty sure I heard it moving in between the body panels. It looks like it made its way back over the firewall by the looks of that damage to the foam seal by the positive battery terminal.

I just heard it move! It’s not the Jeep making these noises. It’s been sitting cold for 15 hours now.

I need any and all tips Jeep and non Jeep specific to this topic.

I had a mouse living in one of my old cars. It made a nest in where the air cleaner was and where the spare was! I would hear the little sh*t running over my head, while I was driving (obvious wasn’t a Jeep but a boring crv) anyway I put some rat-x in a bowl and left it in the glove compartment. I found the body a couple of weeks later. There’s no water in the Jeep, they eat the rat-x and seek out a water source because of the high salt content. Idk if I would use poison, if it dies in your Jeep somewhere you can’t get at or find it it, it’ll smell for a while.

Most rat poisons dry out the body so that it doesn’t stink but I would hate to think I was driving around with a rat carcass in my Jeep somewhere

That is a rat. You really need to get rid of it before it starts eating your wiring. I have rats all over my property. I live in an area with acres of boulders and rats love that environment. Rats got in my engine and started eating the wires. It became a headache trying to figure out what was damaged. I tried many of the remedies mentioned in this thread. I would use the large trap baited with peanut butter. It probably won't kill it but will trap it for you. Check it often in case he decides to chew his leg off to get away. Good luck. Rats are no joke. They are very destructive.

Rat for sure and I like the bucket trap idea posted
If this is in your garage you definitely need to find where they get in
Oh yeah, he's not done, when he's dead he's done and not before and soon there will be more - get em all !!!
I wouldn't poison, rats stink to high hell when dead and although the poison does dehydrate them and kill them it no where comes close to drying them out so they don't stink to high hell
Sorry and I hope you get em good !!! ?

We’ve had to deal with this, but our situation is different. We live in the country on three acres, and the Jeeps are parked outside.

We don’t set traps. When we see the beginning of a nest, we discard it, causing them to have to spend part of their time outside of the Jeep (which they have to do anyway, to find food and water). Even if they have a completed nest under the hood, they will leave the Jeep when it is started and driven. When we return with the Jeeps, if we park them in the same place, the rats will re-occupy the vehicles.

Here is our solution when we notice rat activity under the hood. If you aren’t driving every day, fire up your Jeep every day, let it idle for a few minutes, then, most importantly, park your Jeep somewhere else, as far away from the original location as you can. Rodents seem to take up initial residence under the hood. They don’t like their home loud, vibrating, and hot. They will leave (hopefully they haven’t been there long enough to have babies). Moving the vehicle far enough will cause them to take up residence somewhere else.

For us, this has worked 100% of the time, but again, we can park our Jeeps at least 100 feet away from the original spot. In town, you may have to get creative with parking, perhaps in the backyard, on the road, or in front of a neighbor’s house. Good luck!

Do all of the above and do it Now!! Chewed a $5K+ wire loom on my 4R. Ground squirrels— I poured a large amount of gas in a hole, packed it with gun powder, placed a Large rock on top, lit fuse, retreated and watched the eruption. Watched for holes not erupting flames, repeated twice until all holes blown out. No More Squirrels!! ?
