Dumb question which I’ve been noticing and I’ve owned many Wranglers in my 64 years. My 2021 Willys I ordered in 2020 has been flawless, like my 2012 and 2016. With this 2021 I got the touch screen controls and when in the climate setting I’ve been using the defrost mode lately, in my area we are finally getting some nice Fall season temps. and in the am with dew, I’ve been setting the dual digital temp display to like 76 degrees just for a little warm defrost in the AM when I leave for work around 4:30 am. Sees to be fine outdoor temperatures have been 50 to say 55 degrees. After work and driving home when outdoor temps rise to say 77 degrees, it seems that the air from the defrost vents are actually cold without messing at all with temp. settings of 76. I thought I felt this before but blew it off. Why when outside air temps are cold/cooler(50’s) the vents at 76 seem warm but when outside temps are hotter(70-80’s) in the afternoon turn to cooler air blowing out? Shouldn’t the air coming out these vents be a 76 degree temp out of the vents regardless what outside ambient temp is? Hopefully this question makes sense, what am I’m missing from the old manual knobs. And NO, I don’t have the HVAC set to Auto.

Never really thought about it. If cold, I turn it up. If warm, I turn it down.

You don’t need it set to auto. If you set it to 77 in the morning it will be warm air, in the afternoon it will be cool air. You need warm air when 50 out, you need cool air when 80 out. The days of simple controls are gone.

Not in all corners. Every time a new thread regarding wonky touchscreen HVAC functioning appears, I appreciate the analog control dials in my Sport even more.

The days of needless complexity are here.

So stumblinhorse, that’s what I was saying. I just have it in “regular” defrost mode and left temp. settings the same. It was doing exactly what you said, it came out warm in cool mornings, and cold during warm afternoon. So you are saying it’s working correct then?? I was under the assumption that no mater what outside temp. Was, it would always blow hot if it was set to 77.. So it is sensing outside and doing it’s own adjustment, correct?

I feel the same. A BASE Willys with little to any options is a pretty basic vehicle and just the way I like my Jeeps. I see some of the dash shots of folks having issues and while those electraonic dash and all the screens are nice, they are not for me.

Just one ol’Farts opinion!

When you set the temp on the digital dash you are telling the system what you want the inside temp of your jeep to be. You are not telling the system what you want the air temp coming out the vents to be. So if it's colder outside (50s) and you set the temp set to 76, the system has to blow warm air to get the inside temp to 76. If it's warmer outside (70-80s) and you still have the temp set to 76, the system has to blow cold air to get the inside temp to 76. This is assuming the inside of the jeep is close in temp to what the outside temp is.

Again, you are telling the system what you want the inside temp to be and not what temp you want the air coming out the vent to be. So it sounds like your system is working as it should.

Never really thought about it. If cold, I turn it up. If warm, I turn it down.
If it's cold, I accidentally turn on the steering wheel heat and if it's warm, I accidentally turn on the 4-way hazard lights. If I need more air, I'll occasionally crank up the volume dial thinking it's the blower.

While it's still better than a touchscreen, I absolutely hate using the JL's vaguely tactile HVAC button controls while I'm driving and actively avoid using it if I can ?

The guys with the old-school 3 dial system are lucky..
