I believe I saw someone on her recently with a stock jeep 7000 miles getting death wobble and it turned out being the ball joints. Just no rhythm to when they wear out or if they came bad from the factory?

So there’s no way to know if ball joints are bad? Kind of sucks that you just have to cross your fingers and can’t know it will help before you replace them.

Maybe depending on how hard you wheel or how many potholes you hit? At 36K miles I would change the ball joints. And that opens another conversation as to which ones...

Death wobble is not temperature sensitive.

In my case it is. I can drive like a hooligan when it’s above 40 and hit everything.

Agreed, same here; I forget all about the problem in the summer.

After trying everything I finally changed the tires. Swapped out my 35" Maxxis Razr ATs with stock tires and the problem went away. I don't understand the mechanics of the tires causing DW (i rotated all 5 tires twice with the same results) but the proof was in the pudding. Good luck.

Sorry to hear... my DW was due to a very loose steering stabilizer.
Your steering stabilizer was not the issue. While a new stabilizer may have "fixed" your DW, it is merely masking a bigger issue. I've been running without a steering stabilizer for 6 months or so without issue. While I don't recommend running without one, I always set up and tune suspension with no stabilizer installed.

I understand what you are saying. I had about 8K miles. Northridge installed a Clayton lift. A couple days later I had serious DW. Took it back in (I live 5mi from them), they said SS completely loose. Tightened and retorqued rest of suspension. No issue since and it's been 9mo. You tell me what was/is the problem?

Well without giving your Jeep the once over I can’t tell you what it is. What I’m trying to convey is your steering stabilizer is not the issue and tightening it up did not fix the issue. The SS is merely masking whatever caused your wobble. Could’ve been something else was found loose and it was indeed fixed by torquing everything properly. Could still be an issue and if that’s the case it will crop up again.

Understand the SS is not the root cause, and unfortunately, I expect the issue will crop up again someday.

I guess my original comment was not accurate in that it was not the cause, but it was the solution, others have had the same experience.

Maybe an analogy... the band-aid stopped the bleeding but didn't heal the wound. :fingerscrossed:

Yeah I get it, but it's not really a solution. I would want to figure out the root cause before it gets worse.

It is apparently a temporary solution. I do wonder why then with so low miles, everything properly torqued, brand new suspension and mild lift, camber good, done by professionals that do this on Jeeps every day, what else could it be?

I very much doubt that it is ball joint wear since it has only happened that one time and never again.

You'd be surprised how terrible the factory BJs are. The first thing I always check is the front track bar for any movement within the mounts, then I go to BJs which are not easy to diagnose until removing them. I've seen the factory BJs toasted in 8k miles. More often than not though the holes in the track bar mounts are oblong and allowing movement. I still disagree that the SS is any kind of solution as it's not fixing the issue, only masking it. Ignorance is bliss I suppose.

Well at some point I will replace the BJ, especially if DW happens again. I will likely have Northridge due the work since my garage/shop is full of woodworking tools and sh$t. My driveway is my only option for vehicle DIY. If it wasn’t also a DD and I had a lift in my shop, I would probably dive into it now.
