When I open the door the dash lights up saying "press brake and ..." (or something like that). If I close the door and walk away eventually the display goes off, I'm assuming while the display is on the computer is also running and using some amount of battery power.

Two weeks ago we were camping and I was sleeping in the back of the Jeep. I noticed that the display stayed on for a long time, a couple of hours. I cycled the start button through ACC and RUN back to off and the display went off shortly after that. I don't know why it stayed on for several hours but seems that it could eventually drain the battery. Has anybody else seen this? What triggers the display to come on in the first place and could that have something to do with the display staying on?

Mine does that on rare occasions.... once when I opened the tailgate after turning it off. I was pretty sure I'd gotten the tailgate closed back firmly, but maybe not.... it stayed on all night and my battery was dead the following morning. I've also had it stay on when I've turned it off and exited normally, so not sure if it's just a freak thing because it is extremely rare. I put my battery tender on pretty much every night now, so I check to make sure the display isn't still on.

I had a slightly different situation the other day where I had to move my Jeep and noticed my radio reset, restarted, then froze up. My backup camera wasn’t working either. I went in to shower and came back out about a half an hour later and my screen was still on. I’ve had the Jeep over a year and never had that happen before. I had to disconnect the battery to get it to go back to normal, and I haven’t had a problem since.

How old is your battery? Might be time for a new one.... I had similar radio issues when I first bought my Jeep because the dealer had installed a non-AGM battery and it started to fail in less than 6 months (I bought my JLUR used)....

Can't be of much help either, but this morning my Jeep wouldn't turn the radio off because a software update. I just left it parked outside with the radio playing, it shut itself off by the time I went to lunch. The electronics on these things seems a bit buggy.

Thanks for the heads up. Mine is a 2019 and I’m unsure if the battery has ever been replaced. I will take a closer look at my battery when I get a chance. Voltage numbers always look good on off road pages, (usually over 14 volts but sometimes as low as 13.8) but I’m not sure if this is a real glimpse at battery health.

While the vehicle is running this doesn't say much about the battery but is some indication of the charging system. I haven't tried looking at voltage when the car is not running, that might indicate just the battery voltage.
I read that a properly charged AGM should read 12.8-13.1 V. I just got a new battery and from the dealer it read 12.6V.

I bought a used 2018 almost 3 years old. When it was right at 3 years old I put a new battery in it so I would have peace of mind while on trails. The battery I took out of the 3 year old car was only 2 years old which implies that the OEM battery lasted 1 year. The battery I put in lasted 47 months and I got it replaced under warranty. The replacement lasted 7 months and I got it replaced today. I don't know what to think about the replacement battery. 7 months ago one store told me that on the average they last 5-7 years. The other store today told me that they almost never have to replace one of them under warranty (5 year warranty). The battery industry is crap and buying a new battery of any brand is a crapshoot, YMMV.

And a new electronic problem. After the CAN bus replacement fix, 3 weeks of perfect operations. But, today the steering wheel dash is totally dark at startup and while driving. The big center display is normal, the Settings all look normal. Nothing changes toggling between Auto vs Manual.

Anyone have a clue what has happened? Is this a specific fuse issue?

Internet search yielded another "modern" Jeep feature:
  • A blank or dark steering wheel display on a Jeep JLU Sahara
  • Possible soft reset issue with the UConnect system
  • Try: force new soft reset by
    • holding steering wheel phone and voice activation buttons
    • for 10-20 seconds
Worked!

If you're sleeping in your Jeep, you're probably keeping the FOB in there with you too. Possibly in the cup holder? So... it's sensing the FOB and staying ready for you to start the motor. Try putting the FOB as far back with you as possible and see if the dash turns off.

This is just my best guess, of course.

I seem to recall the dash staying awake excessively a couple times after a series of door openings/closings while working on the Jeep or camping out of it - but I've never identified an exact trigger. Now when I camp I close the doors without latching them so if I need to open one again it won't wake up the JL electronics.

In my experience, the fastest way to put the JL dash screens to sleep is to lock the closed doors (which works using the fob from inside the JL, too).

This isn't a thing. I sleep inside my jeep all the time, dash goes out usually quickly, sometimes takes several minutes. Recently had episode OP describes where I came out to garage to find it still on. Open and close door, resolved. I do keep the battery on a tender. It's a Jeep thing. Don't lose sleep over it.

I was laying there trying to go to sleep, worrying about why it didn't go off and would that run the battery down. We were camping south of Montezuma, CO so not a good place to have a dead battery. I do carry a lithium jump starter for emergencies. After a couple of hours I crawled out of the sleeping bag and cycled the push button to ACC, RUN then off and after a minute it went off.
