Ok guys might be a stupid question. My coolant started leaking from the bottom of the reservoir and theres a hole that looks like it needs to be plugged up (not sure that’s why i’m asking on here). So I didn’t know if it was the actual housing leaking or if it was coming from that tiny hole. Submerged it in water and didn’t see any bubbles from the casing, only that hole.

I know the holes supposed to be there but wasn’t sure if a plug fell out

That’s the overflow. If it’s leaking from there, the reservoir cap is bad or there is something causing excessive pressure buildup.

Did you overfill it? Other than that, the quick connect on the bottom hose is prone to leaking.

Nope not overfilled. Would you recommend replacing the house, housing, or both?

Replace the bottle. These fail and leak all the time
it’s only leaking from the bottom, not any seams. i submerged it in water and saw no air leaking

It'll only leak when it's hot. It leaks straight through the casting crimps. They have 3 different common leak points, so just replace it to be safe. That hole you see is for overflow, if it gets too hot it'll push the cap up and leak through a little hole in the threads down through that outlet. You can see the hole if you take the cap off

is there any other way to test for leaks besides putting it back on my car and running it? i know eventually i’m going to have to replace it but i’m trying to avoid having to get a new part because it’s backordered for months by me.

also could this be why it was making my car smoke?

I agree and just replaced mine a few months ago. I could see some on the bottom near that hose but I only replaced the reservoir and it resolved the issue. They made a two piece tank so it's going to fail at some point and only leaks under high pressure.

Local dealers were expensive but ordered from another dealer - under $50 with shipping. It's a little tricky to replace due to the odd angles but plenty of threads on the subject and this old guy did it without scraping my hands too much.

Possibly depending how much it's leaking. Mine was getting sloshed near the engine but not enough for smoke from under the hood. The leaking showed up on the frame within the blue circle in this picture. Primarily, it just ran down the frame onto the ground.

Every brand uses this style of reservoir and they never fail. There’s a manufacturing defect here.

You don't need the original black reservoir. You can snag the normal see-through reservoir out of a 3.6L and it'll work fine.

Why the fuck is it a black reservoir anyway? It even has a dipstick ffs. What was wrong with a normal see through one like in every other model we produce? Supplier nonsense, surely.
