Confused which JL model to get

The entire point of a Rubicon is that it has lockers on both of those live axles, so if a driver is digging a hole in sand, it's likely user-error.

But with LSD you don't have to push a button or be in 4L.

Hey, future Jeeper here, I was wondering what I should get. I am deciding between a Rubicon, a Moab, or a Rocky Ridge. I understand the Rubicon is the classic capable Jeep which as I plan on taking it to the beach once a weekend I feel like I need something off-road capable, the Moab seems to be the top of the line now and I LOVE the way it looks, and the Rocky Ridge even though it is a little more money, seems to be the best of both worlds, agressive mud tires, huge lift, and just overall COOL looks. Please help me out, money ain't no thang so either or is good. Thanks, can't wait to give everyone a jeep wave!

Hi and welcome! I go to Smith Point all summer long. I’ve driven 04 Rubicon, 14 Sahara, and my 18 JL MOAB out there. All go great on the sand even if you don’t take the 2 minutes to air down. On my JL I replaced the factory BFG KO2s with 285/75R17 Ridge Grapplers. Lockers and sway bar disconnects are great, they are just overkill for driving on the beach in my opinion. I’d reccomend the MOAB for the creature comforts making the drive out there. If you ever get stuck, I’ll be the first one there to hand you a beer and help you dig out.

This is why I chose the MOAB. I’m never in 4L and no need for lockers. My limited off road use is on trails and of corse winter weather. I also just loved the way it looks.

I've never heard of Rocky Ridge either so googled up their site. They seem to take stock JL's and mod them. I suspect adding $10-20K to the cost which seems really expensive when all you really need to do is get the Moab and if you really crave a lift pick up the Mopar/Jeep factory lift kit. Granted only 2" but same Fox IPS shocks and all the little brackets and parts that you need to do a painless installation. Might want the Mopar/Fox steering stabilizer upgrade as well...

Something to consider if you are vertically challenged like me, is the higher you go the tougher it will be to get in said Jeep. And if you are married to someone who is vertically challenged (unlike me) you might not hear the end of that mistake.....

Probably cost around $4-5k to do the factory lift installed and wheels and tires depending on how crazy you go.

MOAB has wider rock rails then the Rubicon. The wider rock rails make for a nice step to help you get in and out. Or you can order one of many steps available. I am sure you can sell a MOAB rock rail to someone quickly to offset the cost of new steps. I am sure a Sahara owner would be more then happy to trade their steps for a MOAB rail.

I’d reccomend the MOAB for the creature comforts making the drive out there.

What creature comforts does the Moab offer that a Rubicon doesn’t?

I have another question, my friend said I could nab a sport s and outfit it to be as capable as a rubicon or a moab for cheaper. My concern is then would I be able to get a Moab or Rubicon sticker to put on the hood because I think it looks so Cool! Thanks.

You can get stickers that say anything, however putting stickers on something that it’s not makes you look like a tool. I would suggest custom stickers or wrangler on the hood.

Of course you would be able to add a Rubicon and or Moab sticker, but it still would be a modified Sport S.

Nothing wrong with modifying a Sport S. Some Jeepers do an amazing job of it. However, why would you apply a sticker on a vehicle designating it to be what it is not?

It’s your Jeep, you do what you please. I find in this life people will always find a way to call you a poser..my friends aunt calls anybody that drives a rubicon special edition with the hood and steel bumpers a poser that is not a 10th anniversary rubicon because it was suppose to be exclusive to that model..now it’s on JLs! Nothing wrong with modifying a Sport S. Some Jeepers do an amazing job of it. However, why would you apply a sticker on a vehicle designating it to be what it is not?

I just really like the look of the sticker and if Im putting better things than what's in the package onto the Jeep I feel like there's no harm. It's not like people keep their wrangler bone stock anyway.
