We have a JLURD with the stock plastic bumper. It’s my wife’s daily driver but we are looking to add a steel or aluminum bumper, more for protection from animals and light trails than rock crawling. We don’t plan on a lift or larger tires at this time. We don’t want a 140 lb bumper since it would cause a lot more sag than we want without suspension changes.

We originally we’re looking at the barricade bumper at 54 pounds because of the weight but started thinking about the optional Rubicon steel bumper and what it weighs. Does anyone know if the springs are different if this bumper is ordered from the factory? I wouldn’t think so but not sure. We know we already have heavier springs due to the Rubicon and being a diesel. If the springs are the same, it opens up to maybe 90-95 pounds for a bumper without sagging too much and would be close to stock using the steel bumper. I’m guessing the weight of the plastic bumper is 10-15 lbs?

We aren’t looking at the Rubicon steel bumper, mainly because of the lack of d-ring capability. if we increase our weight limit to the 90-95 pounds it opens up a few more options for us. Thanks for the help.

You can simulate a heavier bumper - put some weight on the existing one :)

Sand, salt cement from hardware store
water is 8.34 lbs/gallon - put a few 5 gallon buckets on the bumper
have someone of the approx weight stand on it
etc.

Then you can measure the before after sag and see what impact adding more weight will have.

Good idea. Should have thought of that. Will try this out as we narrow down our choices.

Can anyone confirm that the springs on a Rubicon diesel are the same whether it is factory ordered with either a steel or plastic stock bumper? Thanks

We’ve looked at some of the. Rockhard bumpers. We may have to save up for something like this. They are a little more than we were thinking.
Rugged Ridge has some stamped steel bumpers for the front that are not as heavy as the plate steel type. I have the Stubby Arcus and the bumper is not bad, the winch plate though is heavy, and that's a good thing. Depending where you order from they can be reasonable. The front may drop a half inch over time with a winch and it's supporting hardware on the front, nothing a spacer can't solve later on.

Extreme Terrain has some cheaper options. But if you are concerned about weight, aluminum is worth the extra cost. Rival is a popular choice.
You know the stock plastic bumper does have metal behind it.

ET has an open box of this one for $387...you can't beat it.
