Can we end this? I'd much prefer talking about Wranglers, and before we both get banned.

I understand you're newer to the forum. Though no one is immune to the ban-hammer, I have learned over the last 3 years being a member here, (for the most part) how not to get banned.

The medical texts that used the term, are quite antiquated. Just because a scientific source used a term does not mean that it isn't still a racist term. Mengele, Davenport, and Laughlin wrote much on the science of genetics, that doesn't mean that it wasn't full of racism. Even trying to back up your previous statement by saying that individuals born with Downs syndrome look like the people who are from the Mongol region is quite false and makes one cringe at the comparison.

The term is not one of scientific accuracy, but of racial bigotry.
Again...

1)I don't write the texts or take issue with your observations.

2) This only came up because @Tredsdert claimed that a picture he posted of someone with Down's Syndrome (not me--I didn't post it) was one that randomly came up in a search of "men with crowns" that funny enough is a search that not only I can't reproduce, but he (miraculously enough) can't or won't either, and that ....

3) He innocently (as if) missed that the man in that photo had Down's Syndrome. Really? I expressed that it was inappropriate and he removed it, not the other way around. Did you miss this man having Down's syndrome too, really?

This led to a discussion of how one could possible miss that this man's physical features fail to reveal him as someone with the disorder and my claim that this post on @Tredsdert part was no accident. P.S. I've received private messages telling me that this isn't @Tredsdert's first foray into inappropriate content here.

So if you want to assign blame, please take this up with him or those who publish such textbooks. As far as I'm concerned the only reason that it is important to have medical texts that discuss the appearance of this syndrome (and it is important)--and if their language doing so can be improved I'm all for that--is so that more costly genetic testing can be ruled in or out, and then only for the purposes of identifying those with the disorder for purposes of getting them treatment. People with Down's often have a mosaic of varying medical issues, particularly a propensity for heart issues that may need remediation--or is pointing that out offensive too?

Wait--if I was a better person I wouldn't even "see" such defects. By gosh by golly, it's not my fault that some people with Down's had unnecessarily shortened lives from congenital heart defects that could have been treated or surgically addressed, because I don't "see" in disorders. Everyone is equal.

I know the above isn't your claim, but it is the dangerous next step.

Here's another description of the disorder's appearance, that's more?? politically correct. Again I didn't write it.

"A flattened face, especially the bridge of the nose. Almond-shaped eyes that slant up. A short neck."

Want to bet this too could offend people too? There's a name for this phenomenon. It's called the "euphemism treadmill" and it was coined by Steven Pinker It describes the process in which "terms with an emotionally charged referent that were once euphemisms become dysphemistic by association with the referent ."

In English: we change the offensive definitions and they in time become offensive themselves, requiring change.

So go out in the world Dusty and with God's speed and my good wishes right the wrongs here. But pick your fight with those who not only publish such pictures on this forum, but then seek to pathetically assign blame for bigotry to the ones like me who point out that their context was offensive.

@DaltonGang : let me see if I've got this right. You'll gladly and proudly spew diesel combustion fumes into the air around you for the sole purposes of screeching your pickup truck's tires, just in the hopes of annoying me, proudly not giving a hoot about the people around you

....unless of course those people around you are special needs... because you're the sensitive one here.

Sure.

That's a lot of back tracking just to defend using a racist word. I'll paraphrase,
"It's not my fault, it's the text books." "It's not my fault, someone else did something offensive, blame them." "It's not my fault, it used to be socially accepted." "I'm not a bigot, but you must be for noticing." "Don't blame me for doing something horrible, I'm just as offended as you are."

And finally the end of the rant.
....unless of course those people around you are special needs... because you're the sensitive one here.
Why did this all start again? Oh that's right, you were complaining about the picture.

I'm reminded of a quote from the time when that term was considered acceptable.
"Never argue with stupid people, they'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience."

Add @angrykitty to the list of recently banned people. I didn't see anything in the thread, but it was titled "Stealing is bad, no apologies from me."
I was reading the thread he was in and saw it happen in real time. Lol
I bet he was scratching his head and wondering what was going on with his internet connection.
