Hey everyone,

What are you guys running for a cooler that fits behind the back seat?
Beach season is upon us and I'm having the same problem as trying to find a hard cooler for a golf cart...nobody makes one skinny and tall enough.

Thoughts?

If you’re just doing beach trips, why not a soft cooler? There’re plenty of tall skinny ones that look like purses totes. They work just fine for day trips to the beach. If you’re fishing, just line it with a thick plastic bag (like one for a trash compactor)—that’ll keep the sand and fish smell out of the cooler pretty well.

I feel like a hard cooler would hold up a bit better over some time. Last soft cooler I had barely made it a year.

I don't know how much you're looking to spend, and I have a JLU, so this may not be apples to apples.....however, I have (2) of the Oyster Tempo coolers and they rock! It is a vacuum-sealed, double-wall aluminum cooler that is perfect for behind the front passenger seat. It sits in the footwell of the back seat (on the floor, directly behind the front passenger seat) and is held stable by moving the front passenger seat back until it wedges up against the cooler. Below is a link:

This thing can take 4 ice packs (think blue freezable packs) that will keep things at or below 38*F for 40 hours, with multiple openings. If I put the 4 freezer packs (these are different and white) in the cooler, it will literally keep things frozen for the same amount of time, or will freeze items put into the cooler. I've frozen water bottles, lettuce, etc. using the white packs. It's an investment, but one that doesn't require ice and really works well (hence my buying a 2nd one for my wife's vehicle).

That’s fair. I’ve had good luck, but I’ve also seen plenty of zipper issues or busted seams when they’re overloaded.

How much are you trying to carry?

Have you considered a hitch basket?

Well between myself and my gf + friends, a 12 pack goes quick on the water...so has to be something bigger than that.

Doing some size comparisons though...RTIC makes a 20 quart that might fit...a little over 13 inches in depth might put a dent in the seat a bit, but should fit with a swift door slam.

Behind the back seat on a 2dr basically has enough room for 3 or 4 paper grocery bags. That cooler looks like it might fit.

How durable is it? Like, are you willing to sit on it? I’ve had mixed results on vac-sealed coolers; as soon as the seal is broken it’s just a box.

So, I'm using this in between the front seat and back seat in the footwell of the backseat. Below are the dimensions:

It is tough and I haven't dented or really hurt mine....to date. However, I wouldn't personally sit on it. I might use it for a footstool but I wouldn't risk sitting on it. (I don't want to have to replace it) It does hold 36 cans with the ice packs.

In their FAQ:
The cooler Tub’s external dimensions are W 17.9" x D 9.8 x H 12.6" (W 45.4 x D 25 x H 32 cm). When you include the mounting frame and handle, the dimensions at the extremities measure W 20.1" x D 11.8 x H 12.6" (W 51.2 x D 30 x H 32 cm). The external volume of the cooler is just 37 quarts (35 liters).

The cooler can take loads of around 220-260lb (100-120kg) on the lid so there should be no problem using it as a seat. While it is also possible to stand on the lid, we really don’t recommend this as the cooler’s relatively small footprint can make it unstable on uneven surfaces or with sudden movements.

I recently bought a Booge RV portable electric fridge/cooler with a backup battery that will power it for quite a while with no problem. It is only a little over 9 inches wide. I bought it to slip behind my passenger front seat since I have the back seat out anyway. It can double as my freezer for longer trips as it will get down to -4.

Do a search for Rubbermaid Slim Cooler. Had one for years. They appear to be discontinued, but ebay has new ones.

The Yeti wheeled 32 mentioned above is too big. I have one. The Yeti 15 works. It holds 22 cans without ice so adjust accordingly. Igloo wheeled 28 works barely because of the handle. They have a 25 marine in white that looks like it would work also.
