I've owned my 2021 JL since May of 25. For the first time I had to carry something where I had to fold the back seat down and back. I took off with nothing in the back and was surprised to find the back seat just kind of flopping back and forth. I had to hold the seat as I was driving to keep it from banging around until the box I picked up held it in place. So...

Am I missing a strap or tether of some sort that holds it in place when folded? Or am I not aware of a latch or something that needs to be set? Hard to believe Jeep would not have a way of securing the seat when folded so I believe I'm missing something or skipping a step.

Yup, two straps that you tie ā€˜er up.

Be careful though. Women go crazy for dudes that drive 2 doors with the seat flipped up. Youā€˜ve been warned……

I have almost a similar situation and it might be part of this problem. What I found when my headrest would not stay in the up position, it wouldn't latch when putting the seat back into the normal position from being folded forward. There is a cheap ass cable system that when you lift the center handle on the seat drops the headrests and unclamps the seat so you can lift it to the folded position. There are also two straps on each side by the headrest that allow you to flip one or the other headrest down. I would pull the cover off the back seat and see if they are broken. Mine was broken and I have used it maybe 3 or 4 times in 4 years. Cheap POS..$100 for a new headrest latch. What BS!!

Letting the rear seat bounce can knock off one or more of the cables that control the latch and headrests. This happened to me when the JLR was new and I didn't know better. One of the cables
that latched the seat flipped off, requiring opening up the back of the seat to reinstall the slipped cable. I now always use the straps when the seat is folded up.
