The midland is a great choice. With the controls on the handset, you can tuck the body out of the way - mine is mounted in the glovebox.
Get both the 6db antenna and the smaller ghost antenna. I run the 6db as standard - in the desert, so lots of open space. My 15 watt unit can easily hit l.o.s. repeaters from 50 miles out - but toss on the ghost when running in tight canyon or heavy forest as it gives better 'close in' coverage due to signal shape...

A vote for the Midland MXT 275 here for simple turn it on and it works, no programming etc. Clean easy to hide base unit as well. Mines under the drivers seat and I routed a cat 6 network cable extension so I can just unplug the handset when not needed.
Did the same on my pick up so I can just swap the base and handset quickly to the truck for road RV travel with family. I’ve got both the 3db ghost and the 6db whip antennas. I did the same network plug in the bottom corner of the truck console. On my first trip with it now in the truck with my sister using a handheld and it’s been awesome. One day I’ll just buy another unit so both have one. I’m just too cheap right now?

There are many elitist radio people here that prefer absolute perfection over idiot-proof simplicity. The Midland MXT275 is extremely simple to use and does everything you need without the possibility of screwing things up by hitting the wrong button.

Install it behind the panel under the steering wheel so it takes up no usable real estate.

What, I don't need a 45W Moto XPR radio? ?

What a rabbit hole. Was literally looking at cheap walkie-talkies and $100 mobile units today, then stumbled upon $3,000 handhelds and everything in between. Think if I need a $100 training course just to learn how to use the product and become licensed, then maybe it's best to start cheap/simple anyway. The DMR stuff looks pretty neat, but wildly complicated.

I got a deal on a Midland MXT275 a couple of years ago - Amazon price was $150 with free shipping, and if you got one of their credit cards you got $100 off on your order!
