Odd question, but not sure if a separate thread is really needed..

Just got a 2024 Willys w/XR pack.. have the button on dash. Hasn't kicked in once in 300 miles since new. Can't seem to run across it on the info screen.

Coming from a Durango R/T that had it and still have a GC that has it.. find it odd that its like not working or actually missing?

I should have mentioned in my post earlier that I have almost gone 1K miles in the month I've had the JLU and ESS has not kicked in. Again I'm not complaining but I'm beginning to wonder if someone from the dealership borrowed the vehicle for a weekend and disabled it.

Really weird that you do not see the ESS "page" on your info screen. Not sure if it is a blessing or a curse. ;)

Guessing this happened to you?
It did indeed.

It occurred during my first test drive, which was a new JLU with three pedals. I was concurrently surprised at what happened, and annoyed that the salesman in the pax seat would think I flubbed a shift...which I didn't. After a quick explanation of ESS functionality, he pressed the relevant dash button to deactivate it and that was that.

I couldn't purchase and install the ESS defeat harness fast enough after my new Jeep came home.

Yep that would have freaked me out too. What the hell is wrong with this thing? ?

If you use the harness, and elect to keep the backup battery wired in, is it still getting a charge and be usable in an emergency, or will it eventually just be extra ballast?

I'll say it this way:

I took delivery of my new Jeep in late Oct. 2020, shortly after which I installed the ESS defeat harness. As of this date, 3.5 years later, both original batteries remain in situ. The starter continues to reliably crank the engine during cold (and hot) starts. That is, in my view, an indicator of the main battery's overall health.

More to the point, when I do test the ESS functioning every 6 months or so, the small battery continues to restart the engine exactly as I'd want it to if I preferred to have ESS continually operational.

So, in my experience, the small battery isn't yet ballast, despite ESS being turned off for 99% of the past 3.5 years.

My Jeep is driven on an almost daily basis. I've not yet had to connect a battery tender or charger, as some owners who drive their Jeeps only infrequently have reported having to do.

Ok thanks. That's great information. I had my Jeep for 2 weeks and the batteries had to be replaced. Fortunately it happened to me in the driveway. Weird thing was that it started fine, just before,,,it didn't turn over at all. Guessing it just shorted out maybe.

The Jeep is going to be our primary long distance vehicle and I want to do everything I can to make sure there are no surprises many miles from home so I'll plan to pick up the harness. Thanks again.

I know, weird feeling. Was so accustomed to just turning it off at first offense.

Also on JL related note, It's there in my moms 2021 Islander, her "disable" method is never actually pressing down on the brake. She just coasts to stops or brakes and lets it slip a bit more. :P

Will have to play around more with the menu. But yeah, not seeing it unless they moved some stuff around for the 2024 one.

Even with ESS disabled the vehicle actually tests the aux batteries health every time you first crank the vehicle after a cold soak. What you're sharing just proves to show how detrimental S/S functionality is to battery health, and how much better the batteries perform if you just never use the feature.

If you're constantly using S/S you're luck if you make it two years without needing to replace them.

Head into the customization settings on the cluster. I believe you can completely disable the stop/start screen from having a page. It's usually page 6 or 7 by default

After 1K miles, my Jeep cut off on me today. I pulled into the driveway, had it in neutral, foot off the clutch and it died. I tapped the clutch and the engine started. ESS showed not ready afterwards so I guess the brain calculated that one shutoff for the old geyser was enough for awhile. Thinking my practice/habit of putting the vehicle in first gear while at a light with my foot on the clutch is what's kept it from not shutting off but' I'll definitely be getting the harness.
