Just took delivery of my Sport S today. I ordered the Mopar hood lock (and gas cap lock) from allmoparparts.com a couple days ago. I knew it went where the front camera usually goes, and I knew my Jeep doesn't have that camera, so I thought it was going to be an easy install. However when I got my Jeep I realized I didn't have the cutout, so I took a look at the installation instructions online and now realize that I'm going to have to take the grill off to replace the middle insert of that mesh for the lock.

Has anyone done this? How hard/bad is the job? I've wrenched on my previous cars doing things like oil changes and spark plugs so I'm not new to this. Just having a bit of a double take with the thought of taking big parts off a Jeep that'll be at 200 miles max when the parts come in.

I haven’t installed the mopar hood lock but I installed the bolt one, and bolt makes the mopar one. Removing the grill is easy—just ask the Florida headlight thieves. Seriously though, if it’s like the bolt install, it’s like 30 min or less. If you can change oil, you should be able to do this.

Thanks for the reassurance.

Yeah that Florida headlight thieves thread is what made me invest in the lock.

Scares you right?

How do you like the bolt? I know you said they make the Mopar one too. Is that the one that you just put your key on and twist and it autokeys to your car key?

Yep. Especially since I leave my car for long stretches of time.

At the time it was cheaper and auto-keyed to my car key. Was a no brainer. I think there’s also something like I can unlock it and remove my key, and maybe you can’t with the mopar? I haven’t had an issue in almost 4 years.

Jeep Wrangler JL Anyone install the Mopar hood lock themselves? JDA-Mopar-Hood-Lock-Kit-82215137-Installed-Tableto

It's almost completely disassembled. You have to put together the lock and put rivets in the housing. It took several hours, however, I had experience doing it on JKs before. For some reason MOPAR seems to have stopped offering an assembled, self-keying version.

When you pull off the grill, don't pull on the outer part of the grill itself, pull on the inner black plastic part. There's also a couple of tabs about half-way down the grill on the left and right that I remember being annoying.

Return it and get this one from Amazon. Comes with 2 keys and best of all, it is positioned perfectly inline with the grill opening.

There is a video in the reviews section of this item that shows someone manipulating the lock with their fingers to bypass it. Granted the grill is off in the video but I’m wondering if the latch can be pushed open with a screwdriver. Does this seem accurate?

Good question, haven’t seen it done and I doubt I’ll stick a screwdriver in there to see if it’ll open. I installed a key hole cover on it for protection against the elements and it is now absolutely invisible. I have my hood alarm activated. So, not knowing a hood lock is present, they’ll simply undo the latches which permits the hood to travel enough upwards for the alarm to go off. Then they’ll realize that the hood won’t go any further up, meaning it has a lock. It is only then that they have to figure out what to do. Meanwhile the alarm is blasting and won’t shut until the keyfob unlocks the Jeep.

Taking the grill off is not a problem. Raise the hood. Little plastic fasteners have to be taken out maybe 6. Then pull the grill out with a little force. Inserts are not hard to change

I got the rugged ridge hood latch replacements. Easy install and I think they look cleaner than the original latches. Only drawback is requires an extra key.

I installed it in July, maybe took an hour or less. I will say I re keyed locks for my half doors and the locking fuel cap so keying this was no big deal. There is a you tube video if I can find it I’ll post it but I found it in this forum. It’s super easy to install this hood lock.
