I’ve been noticing this rattle for about a month or so now in my steering (21 Rubicon 4xe). You don’t notice it about 80% of the time, but when driving on rougher roads at slower speeds it becomes much more noticeable. The sound is most noticeable when driving straight and the steering wheel isn’t being turned. I can kinda replicate the sound by turning the wheel as you can see/hear in the video. Any ideas? The dealer was not able to replicate the noise. Didn’t think to record a video before taking it in.

It's just audible, or can you feel it anywhere? Happens in ICE and EV?

Random thought, have you checked to make sure the fender liners are fully attached and show no rubbing on the tires.

It happening with no steering input makes me think it may not be steering related.

Both ICE and EV. Haven’t checked the liners. I can feel some very slight vibration in the steering wheel and under the steering wheel where the cloth covers the steering column. Turning the wheel back and forth quickly at slow speeds seems to recreate the sound like something is loose but I’m not turning enough for tires to rub.

I was thinking more like a corner of the plastic got bent down and was catching. There's been a bunch of posts about it happening after heat and high wind.

Have you tried adjusting the tilt and extension of the wheel? I would think the adjustment mechanism would be a potential culprit if the sound is behind the shroud.

No sign of any plastic in the way and I have messed with the steering tilt and extension and it hasn’t changed anything. Thankfully I still have 18,000 miles and a couple years to figure this out under warranty. I’m stumped

Getting the steering column replaced this Wednesday. I don’t think they’re totally sure if it will fix the problem but we shall see.
Did you ever figure this out? I have a 2021 that is making that noise.
Thanks.

Nope. Dealership replaced my steering column and that didn’t fix it. Haven’t worried about it too much lately but I’m still covered under my extended warranty. Currently at 37k miles

Thanks for the update.

I read on the gladiator forum that the air bag or other steering wheel components were loose and causing a similar rattle.

This may be my next step... I'll reply if I find anything.

Have you lubed the rubber firewall gasket? White lithium grease FTW.
Thanks for the suggestion.
My Jeep isn't squeaking when turning the wheel, it is a definite clunk when driving straight on rough dirt roads. Wash board roads really set it off.
