Overall very much love my 392, the engine tune does leave some room for improvement in my opinion and I'm looking to get others thoughts and experience, particularly if you tuned. Would like to see what differences you experienced and what you'd do differently

Things I've noticed
- low shift points - fine under acceleration but leave the engine in too high a gear when cruising
- don't need to be in 7th or 8th on flat road doing 50-60 mph (engine luggs when you want some acceleration)
- don't seem to spend much time in 4 cylinder mode (seems under utilized)
- slow trans shifts
overall i'd like to see the engine spend another 500-750 rpms in whatever gear I'm in. Looking for a better balance as this engine seems overly tuned for headline HP and low end torque. Both in so much abundance seems there is a decent trade-off to be had with better fuel efficiency and engine drivability .... thoughts?

Have you tried using the Offroad+ button yet? It's basically like "Sport Mode". It should correct just about every one of your concerns. (Higher RPM's while cruising, much faster shifts, etc.)

It's even more fun with the loud exhaust open cause it'll crackle and pop like a sports car during shifts.

Just FYI, it does disable stability control by default when you press the Offroad + button, but I believe you can press the stability control button to manually turn it back on while using offroad + mode if you prefer.

Try it out and let us know if helps!

Nice suggestion! I tried it on the way to work today. Here are my observations. Shift points moved up shifts took place at 2500 for the most part, but 4th gear (my estimate as i was in Auto) seemed to shift around 3k-3500 RPMs. I also noticed that the 4cyl mode came on more and i was able to actually drive on level roads and have it stay in 4cyl mode while under light acceleration. Also, I put the traction control on manually.

Been thinking of a Livernois Tune and now I'll ask them about their tune's impact on the OffRoad+. I'm going to drive and observe this a bit more. overall like the higher shift points. TY

You’re both welcome! And thanks for the info that it was still engaging 4 Cylinder mode, since I was just about to tell @2nd 392 that I actually didn’t know! :whew:

About 99.9 % of my driving is just around town, in stop & go traffic, so I hadn’t really noticed 4 cyl mode coming on, but I also wasn’t really watching for it.

So the “Offroad Plus” mode will engage and operate at high freeway speeds? I hadn’t tried that but I assumed it was for much slower speeds Offroad only.

Cruiser reported 4cyl mode came on more and stayed on longer—AAARRRRGH— just the opposite of what I hoped for!!! I haven’t had a chance to try it yet, sure hope his impression was wrong!!!?

Yup, that sucks. You’ll have to let me if it does the same with yours.

Will do, If it does it will be disappointing. I don’t care to use manual shift for store runs etc to keep it disabled. I could make a monthly Challenger forum visit and check out the MDS caused cam issues on 392’s for support!

Jeepless at the moment.
You can't use adaptive cruise while in off road plus mode. Not sure about regular cruise but off road plus is no go on interstate cruises for me.

OP, I had the same feelings about my original 392. It was tuned to drive like a dodge ram 1500 or something similar. The XR drives like I want it to due to the gearing.

?? for shift points and throttle sensitivity!?MDS still functions but engaging less frequently in town under 60 likely due to cruising in lower gear due to MUCH IMPROVED shift points but will continue to go to manual on hwy and longer in town stretches to disable. Improvement with no loss, I’ll take it ?

No not often which was a surprise to me given the torque. i would think with so much torque the engine could more easily hold the vehicles speed/ momentum at lower RPMs.

Weirdly, since I've been running in off road plus more and possible now that the jeep is more fully broken in~6k miles, i am seeing 4 cyl mode come on more often and stay on longer. I'll run off road plus on the way home and see if it behave similarly or not.
