I want my music available to shuffle play through Android Auto. I had no luck formatting a USB and getting it to work.
I have around 450 songs but they weren't shuffling properly using "PI Music Play" or "Fermata" apps.
A google search turned me onto "AIMP" app which works GREAT.
It is simple to use, finds music easily and shuffles all songs well.
I have it set up on my phone (in Android Auto) as the 2nd app (after Waze) so both show up on the 12" display side by side.

I use the Pulsar app for music, it's really good.
I've also got a 256gb microsd card in a usb adapter that works great in the Jeep. mp3 format.

Rocker player for Android, works with Android auto. A 240gb ssd with about 10000 songs was in the console.

Wait, what? You can play music from a USB drive in Android Auto? I can't believe I don't know about this. I assume the app is on the phone? And the app will browse a USB drive? How do you set this up?

No sorry for the confusion. If I plug my phone in use rocket player. I can talk to it, " ok Google ask rocket player to play who's next". If I have not plugged in my phone I use the SSD in the console.

Not that I'm aware of, unless it's an OTG USB drive connected directly to the phone (or playing songs from internal storage or a micro SD card in the phone). Afaik, AA/CarPlay shouldn't be able to access the vehicle's USB ports.

Otherwise, any music on storage that is directly accessible to the phone should be able to be played through an app like VLC, or any other media app that supports Android Auto.

Ok, so I misread. Everything with Android Auto does come from the phone, as I had always thought.

Mine (2024) read a USB connected music player 1 time, then never again.
I have not been able to get it to read a USB drive of any kind.
Another thread suggested formatting in FAT32 but I have not been able to accomplish that.
So i gave up on USB and went to the phone which is working fine for me for now.
A USB would be a plus and I may try again at a later date.

Also, will try Pulsar (already installed on my Samsung) and Rocker (looks like it has ads).

You can unlock rocket for a few bucks. It's one of the few I found that you can talk to.

May have been a few bucks at one time. It's now $30/month.
Pulsar is working pretty well for what I need.

The app is ROCKET PLAYER, not rocker. While it's possible they changed the unlock price, it seems unlikely that they would charge 30$ for a media player much less 30$/Month. When I unlocked it it was 3 or 4 bucks lifetime on multiple devices.

Sorry. Typo. Meant Rocket. $29.99/mo. Screen shot attached.

$30/month is nuts for any app, let alone a music player ?

Think VLC Player is free (without ads) and supports local playback of most formats including video..

Simple Mobile Tools also makes a bunch of great apps for free and without ads. Haven't tried their Music Player app yet, but it's gotta be better than $30/month..

I personally love the Sony Music/Walkman app, but haven't gotten it to work on anything other than my old Sony Xperia phone.

I'm fond of the SicMu app from the F-Droid repository (well, mostly because it was free). I have VLC too, but SicMu seemed better on the phone. It doesn't whip a llama's ass or anything though.

Paying for a music app...what's next, paying for water?
