This is more of a rant/suggestion thread. I’ve reached the limit of waiting at red lights for people to stop f**king with their cell phones. I’m not sure how many city drivers out there experience this but I’m probably close to 40% of the time having to hit my horn to make someone wake up. I no longer want to wake them up. I want to stop their heart. Any suggestions on an obnoxiously loud air horn i can maybe hook up to an auxiliary button? I want it to be so they actually drop the phone and pucker up a little ?. I know it’s a dick head thing to do but anyone who’s sitting and checking their messages or tick tock in the 20 seconds at a red light is an even bigger douche in my book.

Yeah, I’m going to second Steves advice, please don’t. I agree its frustrating, just like when some nimrod starts drifting into you and you look over and see they are watching a video as they drive. Unfortunately, until they master self driving cars I don’t see that changing. The airhorn will likely cause you more trouble than it’s worth.

I get how you feel but…

Thanks for the suggestion. ?? And yes “stopping a heart” is a little aggressive, I should rephrase and say I want them to have a little PTSD the next time they think about checking that message. ?

You'll only be adding yourself to the already large collection of dick drivers. Consider that you will piss off everyone else whose only offence was being in your vicinity.
The collection of horrific drivers is growing… 40mph in left lane, changing lanes immediately after signaling, existing the highway from the left lane. The list goes on and on. At some point just being a defensive and conscientious driver isn’t enough. My goal isn’t to completely piss off everyone around me and that will definitely cause me to consider my options. However just accepting there are assholes out there doesn’t sit right either.

And I’m well aware of my own issues. I’d like to think if someone got me with the air horn it would be enough of a reminder for me to get my shit together.

I'm pretty sure it's technically illegal in NY to honk your horn unless it's an emergency. Rarely enforced, but an air horn could change that.

Decades ago when visiting the Boston area I quickly realized that horns were an expected mechanism for basic communication. The peer pressure was high to participate. Went back a few years later and nobody honked. Apparently they tightened down the laws and started enforcing them.

At some point I think owning a car in NYC will be illegal. In certain neighborhoods they installed cameras and decibel meterswill issue a ticket if you reach a certain level.

As a sort of compromise, consider a compact air horn. I've fitted them to two motorcycles to date, to good effect. The Stebels are louder than a stock automotive horn, but not nearly as obnoxious (and that is the correct word here) as a retrofitted train or ship horn.

PM me if you need installation hints. A bit of care must be taken with placement, etc., but if done correctly, the horn should provide reliable service.
