I'll jump in here, because I'm in a similar situation. Purchased my 1st jeep a few months ago (21 JLU Willys Sport) and asked a similar question about a lift on the forum. @blnewt was super helpful (didn't realize my Willys came with the Rubi shocks, didn't know about caster angle difference between Sport and Rubicon, etc... he linked some awesome threads). I haven't done anything besides reading/research yet, but I'll list a few thoughts in case any of it helps you...I'm amazed at how many different opinions and approaches there are to this! I see soo many lifted Wranglers on the road. Ya'll must be a very mechanically inclined community![]()
FYI... A must for me is minimal negative impact to on-road handling (daily driver, car-seats for kids). Also, my tires will probably end up being 295/70/17 or 285/75/17 (33"-34") with the stock Willys wheels. Lastly, I'm not that mechanically inclined (e.g, I had to buy some tools just to install a Dead Pedal... definitely don't have jacks/stands/impact wrench, etc...), so I have to figure shop/labor costs into the equation.
Most important thing I've learned is that practically all advertised lift heights for kits that include springs are based off a stock/loaded Rubicon.
So...
~ 1-1.5" from Sport (~ Stock Rubi)
- 1.5" spacer lift ($100-300 in parts, keep your shocks)
- Too many brands/options to choose from (I've been looking at the Teraflex)
- I'll probably pair with the 1/4" longer Mopar front LCAs if I go this route to try to maintain the caster angle on my Sport
- I'd have already done this if I was doing the work myself, but paying the shop labor cost makes me wonder if I'd regret this option
- Rubicon takeoff springs ($100-200 on the forum, $400 from a site; keep your shocks)
- Understandably, most forum members don't want to ship, so YMMV depending on where you live, how far you want to drive, and how long you want to wait
- I'd probably pair with the 1/4" longer front LCAs
- I'd have already done this if I could snag the parts for cheap and was doing the work myself, but I feel like if I'm going to spend the money at the shop, I should be doing more
- I think this is where I want to be, and it seems to be a dead zone as far as lift kits are concerned. I'd also be getting new shocks here
- Synergy has some 1" springs/kit (seem to be out of stock everywhere)
- There is a rumor on the forum that Clayton will have some 1.5" springs/kit
- I'm looking to pair with longer fixed or adjustable front LCAs (many options), but probably not adj track bar(s) for this height (though, maybe I'm wrong on this)
- I'm honestly not sure what else I'd need in this range, if anything (bump stop extensions, sway bar disconnects, brake line relocation brackets, etc... are part of a number of kits).
- Springs, shocks, LCAs, probably adds up to ~ $1500 in parts
- SO MANY options (Mopar 2", Dynatrac Enduro 2", Teraflex, AEV, Metalcloak, Rock Krawler, Clayton, OME, Synergy, etc...)
- In addition to springs/shocks, I'm looking for adjustable control arms (front lower or upper at a minimum) and track bar(s) at this height, though it might mean purchasing separately depending on the kit. Some kits come with 8 control arms and front/rear track bars...
- Cost here is probably $2000+ to get those things, but the sky is the limit
