(Apologies if this has been mentioned before but I couldn't find anything in Search)

Lately I've been noticing a 'clunk' noise when letting off the gas briefly and letting back on (picture being in slow bumper to bumper traffic where it involves constant acceleration/deceleration). This seems to happen when in Drive but not when I switch to M-mode and leave it on gear 2 (though I haven't tried it long enough to be 100% sure). Did a bit of researching and it seems to point to several different things (control arms, u-joints, transmission mounts, etc.)

Anyone else noticing this on their JL?

Hi iflyimpilot,
I understand why this would be concerning. Let us know if you decide to have your dealer look into this. Just send us a private message so we can help address any questions you may have while your Jeep is being serviced.

I've been noticing it lately to. I wasn't originally sure as it was my son that first pointed it out a couple months back, and being that the Jeep was brand new I thought nothing of it. I took it out this morning and had the radio off and it was more obvious to hear.

When I'm at low speed, below 25km/hr, and in 2H it is noticeably there. I put it in 4H Auto and didn't notice the clunking noise. I think I'll call the dealership first thing Monday.

Are the clunks louder or more often when you press the gas pedal down harder? If not sure, try it both ways - gentle changes to the gas and heavy changes to see there is a difference. You might have loose ball joints, loose track bar, loose control arms, etc. Just check the torque on them. A lot of people have reported finger tight ball joints. Remove the cotter pins from the ball joint nuts to check. If not, then it could be transmission related.

I've only noticed this during the scenarios I mentioned. I'm beginning to wonder if it's transmission related since I noticed that when coming to a stop (in manual mode), e.g. cruising around above 4th gear, when the transmissions is downshifting as the Jeep slows down, I hear the noise as it downshifts from 4 to 3. It's also audible while it's on D but not as loud.

Just got back from my appointment with the dealership about my clunk noise. Turns out it is the driver side front rotor. They say its warped, and are replacing it under warranty. It'll be next week now before they can do it, I will keep you all posted if that is the fix.

Brake rotor? Interesting.. I think the source of my noise is different though, seems to be transmission related. Aside from how I described it, it's also noticeable when slowing down as the gears are downshifting from 4th to 3rd (especially when in M(manual) mode.

Thanks for the update though, hope your outcome will help others too!

Just picked up the Jeep from the front rotors change out. Sadly the noise is still there. I tried phoning the service adviser right away, no answer and 3 hrs later no returned call. I have to assume he didn't want to deal with it till Monday. I'll keep you all posted.

I've had the noise myself from the day I bought my JL.

It's especially noticeable in stop and go traffic.

It sounds like too much play in the powertrain.

The lastest in this saga......technician checked the entire front end for any loose parts, removed drive shaft, and checked with engineering. They asked for him to put the stock tires and rims back on. Technician says he no longer hears the clunking. I'm on my way to verify, but theory is the weight of the 35's and rims may be to much on the diff. Sounds really quite odd, especially that these Jeeps are the most modified vehicle on the road. Wouldn't they engineer the drive train so that it could handle 35" tires and rims.

Noise still there with stock tires and rims....alot quieter. Technician is at a loss for words. He originally couldn't hear it, but once I rode with him at a lower speed it returned. He'll go back to engineering for next step.

Is anyone else experiencing this issue? If so, please let me know if you have stock tires and rims or what mods you have. Thanks

It would really be nice to speak directly to an engineer at Chrysler about this.... anyone know how one might make this happen? I am going very frustrated with this issue and am worried that the longer it goes the more damage is happening to my NEW Jeep.
