Never had an issue with stock gearing on standard wheels and 37s even towing, but now that we're running 38s and beadlocks, I can feel the toll on the 4xe.

Would like to gain back some off the line and regen braking performance with a regear.

Any real world feedback with large/heavy wheel tire packages re-geared? Thinking 4.88s would be the ticket since the tire diameter delta calcs out as 4.71.

I went to 4.88 with my 37's and have been very happy with that. It is worth noting that, even if you can't feel it, the bigger tires are harder on the drive train. Re-gearing helps with. I am a big advocate for it.

I regeared my Rubicon to 5.13 for my 37" Micky Thompson AT's. I changed from BFG TA's at 87Lbs per tire & wheel to the 110Lbs Micky's. The extra weight and friction from the tread added a bit of drag, but the lower gearing more than made up for it. Also, the throttle response when crawling has drastically improved after the gearing upgrade. It's far less "jumpy" now when crawling slowly and I don't mind the extra engine speed/fuel consumption on the highway; ~2500RPM at 70MPH.
I was speaking with another 4xe owner at EJS who also went to 5.13's; he was wishing he'd gone to 5.38's for his 39" tires.

What year is your 4xe? I think for the 2021 & 2022 you have to do a software update before regearing above 4.10.

Yup, 21. The software issue is one of the reasons I didn't mess with it back when we went to 37s then. I plan on getting it flashed before regearing.

I run 5.38s with my 40s and beadlocks and it's great. No problem cruising 70mph on the freeway at like 2100 rpm. Crawling in the rocks is also vastly improved now as well.

For the 21 and 22 4xe owners - here is the specific flash needed to allow gear ratios above 4.5:1

TSB 08-099-23

Even if all software is up to date, you will need to request this one be done - learned the hard way after regearing last year.

FWIW - I added 37x12.5 BBAT's and moved up to 5.13. Was originally going to go with the 4.88 but the offroad shop recommended 5.13 bc of the extra weight on the 4xe.

I really like this set up and almost wish I went with 5.38's to allow a little bigger tire as the BBAT's run a little smaller than I anticipated.

Thanks for the feedback, gents.

Now that I've got the LJ done, the JL is basically retired from the hardcore stuff. Makes going into the 5s more interesting to me.

Well, my hand has been forced, lol. My wife pretty much drives her a 0 or WOT, and she blew up the rear diff this weekend.

I'm going to stay with 4.88 since the set should be a little stronger, but towed it over to the shop to get regeared this morning.

Is the Jeep undrivable before the TSB? The dealer's probably 15 miles from the shop, assuming I'll need to tow it?

That really stinks- sorry to hear that happened to you!

Yes, without the update, the Jeep is essentially bricked. It goes to limp mode with abs, traction control, and the full set of dash lights. My offroad shop towed to the nearest dealer to flash the software.

With the extra weight of the 4xe (and if your wife is a spirited driver) I'd recommend the 5.13s if it's not too late. Ive seen comments about the "strength" of 4.88 gears and side by side pictures but haven't seen anyone complain about having an issue with the 5.13s. With the 38's you're running, I'd start at 5.13 - your wife will thank you too!

Good luck!
