3.6 oil filter housing

Wanted to reach out to the community and see if anyone has had to replace their oil filter housing on the 3.6 JL engine yet? I have a 2015 JK that the filter housing recently failed at about 92,000 miles. I wasn't aware that this was such an issue until I started searching forums. I replaced the unit myself with an all aluminum Dorman set up. Now I am wondering if I should go ahead and change the one on my 2020 JL unlimited or has Mopar corrected the issue, I am close to 84,000 miles? Thanks for your feedback.

I've read there have been a few issues with the plastic oil filter housing. When or if mine cracks/leaks/fails, I will be replacing it with the Dorman also.

As far as I know mopar hasn't fixed it, probably cause it fails outside of the warranty lol.

Replaced my JK one around 90k-ish.

Mine started leaking at 50K and I replaced it with another Mopar at 70K. The problem with the Dorman is that it will cause the engine to run hotter (unless you install an oil cooler) due to the heat transfer that happens. The plastic Mopar unit insulates some of the heat whereas the aluminum Dorman transfers it.

It is a $hit design by FCA. Had they machined bosses into the block for the o-rings to sit in, they would be better supported and may not leak as quickly. The unit only has 5 bolts holding it and after I torqued mine down, I could move it from side to side with only finger pressure by pushing the top of the housing. Loosening and tightening the oil filter cap (no matter how careful) will over time facilitate the o-ring leaking especially as a they harden from the heat.

Thanks for the reply, I completely agree. My housing did not crack, as you stated the o-rings were flattened out and hard. The back 2 mounting bolts were loose and oil was pouring out the back. Poor design for sure.

Dorman also has an aluminum thermostat housing and one other piece, maybe the water pump if I'm not mistaken. I believe they are all made in PA, USA. I plan on replacing all three when the time comes for my '20 JLUR.

I was thinking the same. I take it that it worked out well?
Sold my Jeep before I made it that far, but I am confident that it would have been great.

Honestly if mine fails at 75+k I'll probably replace it with another OEM part. Other vehicles have "stuff" that needs to be replaced around that timeframe like timing belts, etc.

Mine went bad at 75K miles. My mechanic says there’s an aluminum one u can use and not have to worry about it.

Does the 2.0 turbo have this issue? Or is it just for the 6cyl
