I really hope that's not the actual reason. I mean sure, breathing clean air is a good thing and all, but the amount of potential waste (eventually a replacement battery or vehicle itself) really isn't good for the environment either.I dont think it was designed for fuel economy but for green house gases. I dont know how much it saves but someone has it figured out.
I mean, say you could magically get 20-years out of it (likely with a new battery pack or some luck), how much greenhouse gas is generated mining the lithium and producing either the replacement battery or replacement vehicle that could've easily lasted another decade or longer on the used market? I still see so many cars and trucks each day that were built in the 90s, 80s and some even earlier. Potentially cutting a vehicle's lifespan in half really doesn't help anything.
And I'm absolutely not knocking EV at all, just thinking that there really needs to be careful consideration to what benefits are actually gained (lowered fuel cost, improved performance and a decrease in pollution that far outweighs that which is generated by a more limited longevity).
