Hello,
Im new to the forum but not new to jeeps or off roading. Last year i got rid of my 2 door jk and bought a lightly used 3.0 deisel rubicon. I wanted a deisel specifically and i looked long and hard for a good one. I got a great deal on one with less than 20,000 miles but had to go out of state to get it. Since then ive built it up a bit. Lifted, on 37s...planning on building up or swapping axles ect... the jeep has been great and I can easily say the deisel is not just the best engine ive had in a jeep, its the best engine ive ever had in any vehicle. Since ive had the jeep, my first and only JL, the start stop has never worked. I never cared because im not a fan of it anyway. I have no codes and no messages popping up, it just says start stop unavailable. Should i be concerned or does anyone have any insight on why? I just want to make sure im not causing unnecessary complications before i continue the build.

It's an indication that something's wrong with your batteries / battery system. In my case the dealer eventually found out that my IBS was bad. That fix / replacement was covered by the warranty.

Hey 👋
Welcome
i have a 2022 JLURD with 42500. Love mine as well
Regarding your situation, I agree with Ratbert
Batteries. Specifically the Aux. Luckily for you, its directly under the Main Battery
Hopefully your jeep is under a warranty. If so, try to have both replaced
Best of luck

Stop Start "not available" likely means the Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS) monitoring your CR[an]K (main) battery is estimating State Of Charge at 65% or below, and/or the AUX (ESS) battery is failing a voltage test.

In short, your battery/batteries are not healthy enough to support ESS (Engine Stop Start).

Or someone disconnected something. Did you check the fuse? Did you verify the AUX cables are connected? maybe the previous owner was attempting to run without the AUX battery and didn’t do it correctly. Just trying to help eliminate simple reasons first.

probably something related to the Aux Batt (so many things are!).
but along the lines of 'something simple', check to make sure both of the Hood Sensor switches are properly in place and functional.

(and the mans name was Rudolph Diesel, not dEIsel. ;))

Is your jeep 3+ years old? My bet would also be the aux battery is degrading. Especially on the used market, many people will replace the main batteries, but never the aux. I'm about to swap mine out on my diesel soon. Doing it on my 2.0 was pretty easy although you'll hear some people say otherwise lol.

I had this condition as well. I ended up deleting the AUX batt and installing a new Odyssey H7. The condition persisted, and while not interfering with operation it bothered me that something was not right. On accident I discovered the hood sensors were filled with dust/dirt and not working properly. I cleaned the sensors and switched the leads between the two sensors and it took care of the error and has not returned in almost two years. There are a number of factors that prevent S/S, such as low batt charge, climate control settings, steering wheel angle, manual mode in auto trans etc. with the hood being closed (hood sensors) being one of those parameters the computer checks before S/S engages.

Got ya. I assumed it was aux related but never thought about hood sensors. Again, the jeep runs great, i love the engine so much on and off road, it just nags at me that start stop is unavailable, even though i probably wouldnl turn it off anyway

I just replaced both batteries and s/s came back for a few weeks, but today noticed it was not available even after driving a couple hours.

Lol yes diesel...i only spell it correctly 50% of the time when typing on a smart phone. Which is pretty bad considering the jeep has a badge that says "TURBO DIESEL" displayed across the hood

That was my initial thought. That the previous owner was sick of turning off start stop every time they hopped in the jeep

Disconnecting one of the hood sensors does this exact thing. Free way to disable but have a warning light on dash.

Yes, it is a 2021 and ive had it about 1 year. I had a feeling it was the aux battery but not sure
Hey there 👋
If it is Aux. However, keep in mind that many other factors go into the start stop functionality, like temperature, is your AC on? Etc etc. Also, as mentioned previously hood latch. Possibly bypassed by previous owner etc
Lots of reasons it wont function.
Saying not available is different than "not available charging"
Mine kept saying "not available charging" and hadn't worked in months, plus it was still factory, so it was time.
If it is the Aux, then us Diesel owners have it easy. Aux is directly below Main
Very easy to replace, see pics of mine that just replaced @ 42,000 miles
Best of luck, enjoy your Diesel 👍
