One thing to consider when going bigger. Availability. 285/70R-17, lots of stock in many brands. 315/70R-17 not many options and less in stock. When you go 37 plus almost all tires would be special order unless you frequent a specialty off road shop.
What about 34 inch tires - specifically 285 75 17 or 35 x 11.50 17s.? Are these hard to get? I have read I cn run them on my stock JLR with no lift???

Where did the BFGs run small BS get started? They spec the same as most other tires out there. Generals are the only brand I know of that are actually as tall as they state.

Most tires spec .5” shorter than what the sidewall says. The spec height is based on a fully inflated tire on an approved width wheel, with no load on it. Otherwise, not mountd on the vehicle. The weight of the vehicle will cause enough squat for the tire to be 1-1.25” under spec.

Super Swampers run true size....heavy as sin though. On a good note, I ran them across coral rock at 12psi and never got more than some chips in the tread. :D

The 285/75R-17 is more readily available than the 35X11.50R-17. As the size becomes more popular, there will be more options for purchase. Also, by available I was referring to on the shelf at the store and not having to wait days to obtain them. They will definitely fit your JLR.

If you have a 285 tire on an 8.5” rim, will you have less bead retention capability at low pressure (15psi) than the same tire on a 7.5” rim? I am considering a wheel change but staying with 285 and don’t want to make it super likely to pop a bead. Lots of aftermarket rims are 8.5” or 9” wide. And the XR jumps to 315s but only 8” wide rims.

At 15 psi you'll be fine. The difference is negligible in those wheel widths as far as bead retention in my experience.

It is fairly hilly and often windy. We do like to travel in the Jeep to off-road destinations - Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, etc.... I would rather not regear....maybe I will stick with going to 35's and enjoy....I typically don't do anything more than a moderate off road trail.
Did you ever change out your tires from the OEM 285 70 17 BFG KO2s? If so, what did you go with and how do you like them in terms of ride and performance etc?

I have not changed yet. Still have good tread on the KO2's.

Thanks. I am still running my OEM KO2s as well, only 13k on them and lots of trend. Almost Pulled the trigger on some 392 XR take offs, but then thought when I do change a 285 75 17 would work better. Actually, for what I do the OEM tires are fine-took it to Colorado last year and did several trails near Breck and i had no issues, plus with the 2.0 turbo it performs great around town and on the highway. My bigger tire lust started when I saw that Jeep is making a 2 door with the XR package!
