Did anyone else notice this?

New for 2024, Wrangler 4xe offers Jeep 4xe Power Box, which features four 120-volt outlets with 30 amps of total output, allowing the battery pack to power external devices
Oh, how I wish this would retrofit over.

Yeah I saw that - maybe we'll get a retrofit kit for this, but sadly I kind of doubt it.

It's easy for us to add our own inverter, but (I'm assuming) the factory package will draw straight from the HV battery bypassing the 12V system altogether, and could continually operate even with the Jeep turned off and the door harnesses connected, both of which are things we can't really do (although that second problem could potentially be resolved with a simple software update, if Jeep were so inclined to give us one)

Yes it will almost certainly just use the existing inverter/charger module that's part of the hybrid drive system. Several EVs already offer this or similar capability. Very little chance of being able to retrofit it however, with some hardware output differences not to mention software.

I saw a video, can’t remember which one, that said it was just a power strip that plugged into the charge port. Could be wrong but that sounds like it might work with earlier 4xe’s

This would confirm that the charger has been upgraded to be an inverter as well. The 21-23 models can not do this.

And thinking further... If it can do 120, then why can't it do 240 for v2g functions. Perhaps this could be a later feature to compete with Ford.

Not the charger itself but the charge port. Think of a plug in block like a USB power brick. Except the brick would have 4 house outlets on the outside. Could be there is an inline power inverter on/in the 4xe, or the brick itself is the inverter. If they made the brick the inverter I bet they could make it work for all their 4xe models Jeep wide.

This depends on what you call the "charger"

If you are referring to the wall unit, it's not a charger, just an EVSE, basically a smart GFCI adapter.

In truth the actual charger is mounted underneath the jeep. It would have to handle any voltage conversion as the battery voltage is not exposed to the charge port

Anyone seen any pictures of this new power dongle? If it does connect to the vehicle charge port and can put out 30 amps like the press release says, that would be pretty awesome for camping. I am suspicious that they would redesign the IDCM just to support this and now I wonder if it was always something the hardware supported but that was not enabled in software. Anyone ever take an IDCM apart and take a look at the AC side of it? Should be a rectifier of course, but if there are any MOSFET or IGBT on that side of the component, it might have been designed from the beginning to eventually support this like some other EVs have for several years now.

From a Forbes article about the 2024:

" The 2024 Wrangler 4XE will be the first PHEV that offers vehicle-to-load capability. The Power Box is essentially a fancy power strip with 4 120V AC outlets and an SAE J1772 that plugs directly into the charge port. It can provide up to 3.6-kW of electrical power to run your glamping site or even provide backup power at home during an outage. Running the most important stuff at home like a refrigerator, microwave, lights and even a TV generally takes significantly less than 3.6-kW. Once the 17-kWh battery is depleted, the Wrangler’s engine can run to drive the motor as a generator as long as there is gas in the tank. "

The Jeep video on Youtube shows Jim Morrison using the vehicle to load cable at Moab. You can see it's basically like a 30 foot J1772 cable with an outlet box on the other end.

Here's a clip of the scene:

Here's an example of using an Ioniq 5's vehicle to load capability

Interesting. If it's something that "lagacy" 4xe supports or can support with a software upgrade, Jeep will sell a boatload of them. Seems like something the aftermarket might be able to copy if it turns out the IDCM can actually spit out 120v at the charge port.

I would happily even pay $1000 or more for such an upgrade if it were offered, it would still be a lot cheaper than having to buy a Jackery.

Between this new feature and the optional full-float axles for higher towing capacity offered on the 2024, I'm starting to second guess my decision to pick up one of the last 2023's a few weeks ago...

Although I guess the 2024's won't get the $7500 rebate, so that makes me feel a little better about going with a 2023

I hear ya. I still have my 2023 order not built yet. So I’m going to miss out on half of the 7500 credit and probably not get the new features.

This is a game changer for glamping or using your car as a home generator. I would like to take this even further and hope i can get 220v at 30amps to backfeed my breaker. And then when you run low on gas from it running you can just unplug, drive to the station to fill up, and plug back in at home.

Jeep would also make a killing for the overlanding crowd when they bring this over to the gladiator.

I'm praying this will retrofit as I'm in a 2022.
Even if it's only 120v, you should be able make up a Y cord with two 15 amp plugs that go to a single 30 amp receptacle. That's what I would do. Then I'd just backfeed both legs of my panel with 120v and give up 240v appliances during an outage. That's what I do now with my small inverter generator.

I thought I read someone say that pending 2023 orders that haven't been built yet have automatically been changed over to 2024 orders... don't quote me on that though, I just thought I saw that somewhere. Might be worth a call to your dealership to see.

I was thinking that might be the case but I guess not. I wasn’t even in confirmed status until 2 weeks after they stopped taking 2023 orders. My dealers shows a 5/5 build date so I will probably be one of the last 2023’s built I’m guessing.
