I'm thinking that there are tax implications of doing a trade-in versus selling it yourself. My accountant (a.k.a. "my wife") is currently on a boat in Washington, so I can't ask her. Hopefully someone else can speak up on those details.
Typically you pay taxes on the difference. So if your vehicle trades in at $40k and you’re buying a $60k vehicle, you would be paying 6% tax on $20k. Essentially you save 6% on whatever trade value you get. 6% of $40k is $2,400. So unless you can sell it for well over 6% more than what the dealer is giving you on trade in, it ain’t worth it.

I am in MA. If trading, we pay sales tax on the "difference" amount between trade value & new car sell price. If you sell your car, then pay cash for new car, you would pay sales tax on the TOTAL sales price of new car - in MA. I would not be surprised that it is the same in many other states.

Not 100% sure, but afaik, using it as a trade-in should reduce the amount of state sales tax you owe (if any). Ie, buying a $50k car w/5% tax would be $2,500 owed. Buying same $50k car w/$25k trade-in at 5% on the difference ($25k) would be $1,250 owed.

Selling it outright to a different buyer (or same buyer at a different time) wouldn't allow any tax savings. And this should be considered when weighing what the dealer will offer you versus what you could get elsewhere

Just heard from my dealer that I'm in D1 - she showed me the screen, but there's no build date yet. Boo. I'm hoping by next week I'll have a date and can stop hyperventilating. LOL

As other's have said, a trade in reduces the price of the vehicle you are buying so it always reduces the TTL. So if you sell it outright, you need to sell it for TTL% higher than the trade in amount. Around me that equates to around 10%. So my outright sell price needs to be 10% higher than my trade-in value in order for it to be worth it. That being said, the used car market is hot right now, but with inventories increasing and interest rates climbing I'm considering selling my current Jeep off sooner rather than later.

I skipped the dealer and called the operator at the dealership and said "I want to check the status of an order" and the operator actually looked it up for me and told me my build/ship date.
Ok so this wins best response! I did just this and because of your advice I found I am in D status with a VIN. No build or ship date but I got a vin and that’s something! VIn ending 527537

Have you tried carmax? We're thinking about selling our mustang and carvana gave us a laughably low number compared to carmax.

We might just sell our mustang to carmax soon instead of trading it in with the dealer later because I know that will give us more money. BUT that would leave me with just our 2020 jeep and no other vehicle so I don't want to risk not having a vehicle if my 2020 decided to take a crap.
Yea, I was just teasing the waters on what to expect, and CarMax was a few thousand below Carvana. The dealer themselves won't give me a trade quote ahead of time, do that will have to wait. In the end, I'll just see who had the best offer before I go down all the papers and take delivery.

I just received a text that my Rubicon has been added to the production que! It seems that every time there is an update that the pizza tracker goes down for me and doesn't show my information. My dealer sent me a text yesterday that I had a VIN.

Just received this email ... Does just mean hurry up and wait? Still a little exciting!!

We’re happy to share that your Jeep Wrangler Unlimited is in our production queue. We will notify you once your vehicle has started the assembly process. Depending on manufacturing lead times, your vehicle may take longer to begin this step. We appreciate your patience and will keep you updated throughout the process.

It depends on the state you registered the vehicle. In NJ you save on state tax on the trade in value, but . my friend in CA says they do not save on sales tax on the trade in value. Check Carvana and Vroom ect as you might be surprised at price they offer as it could exceed the tax saving making it better for you to sell directly. I sold my last two vehicles this way and sales price easily covered benefit of sales tax saving for trade in. Cavana was easier to deal with as I got check at pick up Vroom you had to wait for check to be mailed, but they had better price on one of teh vehicles.

Was in Order Confirmed but now pizza tracker says no information available. I’m seeing a lot of movement so hopefully the system is just updating and I move into the scheduled phase

Just got the same "in production queue" email, yay! And yeah, immediately after the pizza tracker no longer pulls up my info ?

Fck, and just got locked out of the system again. So does this mean I should have a scheduled date?
