How slammed is the area during EJS? Is it possible to run a trail between/around EJS groups?

You'll be fine and have more flexibility. You won't have the expert guides, but if you have any experience at all you won't need them. I enjoyed the first time (2015) with guides but had just as much fun the next two trips and saved some money. We did learn a lot from the guides, though. Either way is great.
Awesome to hear that. Thanks @DanW. We’re driving from Maryland so we wanted to build in some flexibility as well.

We’re going down 6th-9th. Going to run I think it was 7-mile rim on Friday, Gold Bar on Saturday, and Hells Revenge on Sunday.

To those who have asked, it gets pretty packed, you can run around the EJS groups, but the trails are crowded. A few get shut down to non-EJS riders, but most stay open to anyone.

We'll be heading out for the first part of the week and would love to join up with anyone looking to do some trails too.

I'm there all week also, free on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. On those days I'll run trails that the official EJS is not running.

Generally you can run trails even if EJS is running that day. Just plan on either leaving early ahead of them or give the group time to get a ways down the trail before you leave.

There are a handful of trails that are exclusive use for EJS. But only like 3 or 4. Those are out-and-back type trails and a large group will clog it up all day.

You can look up the trail list here: https://www.jeepsafarimagazine.com/jindex.html

That tells you everything going on officially.

Restaurants and bars are packed around dinner. Check the grid at rr4w.com for times/days when trails are not being used for EJS.

Do we need something in our registration packets to get onto a trail? I get in Sunday and have a trail Monday morning.

I'm assuming that trail leads will know that I'm signed up...

Trail leads have all that info on them when you line up in the morning. I've gone several days before driving down to Spanish Trail Arena to pick up my packet. You're good.

I think this is the first year they aren’t using flags, they used to pass out felt antenna flags specific to the year to signal you were a registered participant. I think I read they won’t do that this year. Either way, the trail leads have a list of all signed up runners and will check you in as you pull up. I don’t think you need to worry much.
