TLDR: new long block in 2020 Rubicon @ 98k miles.

(bought a Mopar MaxCare 7 year/unlimited miles extended warranty before the factory 5/60 ran out)

Last June I noticed my fans started running on high for about a week. then one day on the way to work the temp gauge spiked hot, so I pulled over to let it cool off. my regular dealer is on my way to work, so I stopped in (the rest of the way it ran fine without overheating) and they took a look. misfire codes for cylinder #3 so they pulled the spark plug and found water in the cylinder - blown passenger-side head gasket.

A week later after that was fixed I got called to come pick it up. while leaving, I thought it was running rough. never even got out of the lot. they pulled it back in... water in #4 cylinder. 2 blown head gaskets at the same time.

The dealer ordered the driver-side head, and on the first start after installing it, it wouldn't run right. they found a cracked valve seat. they then ordered and installed a 2nd head, and everything seemed fine, it ran good. Mopar MaxCare warranty covered it all, about $10k.

The day after I got it back I smelled burning oil. dealer looked at it, said it was a leaking oil pressure sensor (which they say they didn't break), dripping on the exhaust. the sensor was on back-order, so nothing could be done about it except watch it leak and keep and eye on the oil level.

-

4 months later, it starts overheating again. got it to the dealer... BOTH head gaskets blown again  . this time warranty denies the claim, stating neglect due to oil level and coolant not completely topped off. along with the leaking sensor, the radiator had a hole in it. for their part, this time the dealer was great. they waited a week and got a different warranty rep to approve the repair, after showing them that I changed the oil every 5k, instead of 10k per the manual. along with all other services done on time. hardly neglect.

So after sitting at the dealer since October I got it back New Years eve. Now I have a new long block and radiator. roughly $30k covered by MaxCare. for me it wasn't completely free. the dealer couldn't prove to MaxCare that the water pump was bad, and I wasn't going to put the old one in a new motor, so I had to cover that. also replaced the belt, tensioner, rollers, radiator hoses (pretty much everything under the hood is new) while the engine was out. about $3k parts/labor.

For others info, new long blocks come with the newer all-metal oil cooler. like the Dorman, but it's a Mopar part. also updated head gaskets. don't know if the cams are updated or still the old ones.

will attach pics later.

Good luck with the new motor. Sounds like the MaxCare warranty was a good decision!

Interesting, thanks for posting, hope this all works out for you. I'm putting my 2018 back together after blown gasket in cylinder 1. Doing both sides, and installed new Mopar oil cooler/housing (68596318AB). I believe the oil pressure sender is at the rear of this.

When the oil pressure sender leaked, was it the sensor itself, a cracked plastic cooler, or leaking at the joint between the housing and sender?
Did it throw any check engine codes?
Also, do you know what p/n is the Mopar all metal.cooler?

they said it was the sensor itself. personally I think they broke it while changing the driver side head, and they did not want to go into detail about the leak as to not be liable for it.

Did it throw any check engine codes?
only for the misfires, but the CEL never came on. and the coolant level and oil level warnings never came on, which means the ECU thought it had enough to operate, even if slightly low.

Also, do you know what p/n is the Mopar all metal.cooler?
I do not. it came preinstalled on the long block, and that had only 1 P/N for the whole thing. the Service Advisor took pics of the long block, if that number is visible in any of them, I'll post it and PM you.

You should not have had to pay any labor for replacing any of the extras that were installed (WP, belt, hoses, tensioners, etc) since they would have been swapping the old ones over from the original long block and that labor is included as part of the warranty claim. You only would’ve had to pay for the actual parts (no labor) you wanted to be new. For the shop to charge you is unethical.

I didn't pay labor on the swapped parts, just the extra new parts. but I did have to pay for new parts (belt, rollers... etc) otherwise they would have put the old ones back on, as the warranty only covered the radiator, spark plugs and long block.

I didn't know I needed to break it down line-by-line for my post.

you clearly said you paid about $3K parts/labor. My comment was based on your words. I didn’t know you didn’t understand what your writing meant. 🫢.

Nice job Dave. That warranty definitely paid for itself. I hope you have good luck with your new engine.

I would have paid the extras for new parts too. Makes no sense for Jeep to install old parts on new long block. Now the JL has had a decent mid life refresh.

I read it the same as you. Guess we’re both dummies.

Likely the sensor leaking on the exhaust was a cam position sensor located on the valve cover. The have replaceable seals.

Northridge 4x4 verified it was the oil sensor.

Mopar has started carrying the Dorman oil filter housing on their parts website as well. Everyone on the other Wrangler forum is trying to figure out if Dorman revised the port seal configuration between the housing and the cooler to separated seals like the latest Mopar part.

yeah I wish I could find more investments where the $1900 buy in paid out $35-40k. ;)
This is exactly why I get quite a laugh out of the "just put that $2k you would have spent on the warranty in savings to cover anything that comes up" guys. LOL. I guess that might have actually worked in 2010. Maybe.
